It uses a custom-designed transport by Raymedia -- and it is built like a tank and sounds fabulous. So, I respectfully disagree...

Cosidering that I have all McIntosh electronics; see below and a 6 year old Sony player, I'm in a good position to judge. That transport is a piece of
SH!T and McIntosh themselves admits they are changing it. The Sony has solid bass and a solid stable image. The Mac piece is grainy with no solid bass; I couldn't believe how bad it sounded. This is one of McIntoshes worst products ever; they simply make lousy digital unless you go with their reference products for $15K It is built like a piece of junk compared to the Sony which weighs almost 60lbs! A huge dissappointment. You can think what you want. I think it's a piece of junk.

I've always thought that the Audiomecca Mephisto was one of the coolest looking pieces of digital gear around...although I've also heard that they can be "tempermental" - but beautiful sounding (when it works)

For all the money represented on these pages just buy a TT and get better sound (IMO) for a lot less than $24,000, per se.

This is a thread crap that I am getting sick of. Linnies never hear the overwarm midbass of the LP12 and have seldom been in a position to compare similarly priced and wellset up vinyl and cd systems. I have heard some very good vinyl setups but for a lot of people the obsessive compulsive behaviour that is required to get good sound from vinyl is not a practical reality.

Last time you heard a Reimyo, Audio Aero, Wadia....? Enjoy your vinyl. Old cars are fun too but on average not a patch on a modern vehicle. There are many ways to enjoy yourself. Start a turntable thread ... I wouldn't dream of tut tutting and suggesting a cdp to play your vinyl on.

The fact of the matter is that the modern LP12 doesn't have a midbass hump as did the earlier units. Actually when I purchased my LP12 I compared it to well set-up tables by Oracle and VPI and purchased the Linn. Regarding digital I sold and listened to Theta and Wadia for 2 years. I've recently listened to the top end McIntosh and a couple of other well regarded units. My statement stands.

...so does my statement. It is like a 'nuffin beats a V8 mate' post to a modified AWD turbo car posting...(imo)

this unit is $6700 list (I believe); should be 20% off of that and it doesn't play SACD, only HDCD/CD
