Started my Sunday early. Neil Diamonds Hot August Night by MFSL. This may be one of the best live recordings ever. The soundstage is just beautiful.

Also spinning Rush Permanent Waves by MFSL. This is an awsome remaster.

Lots to do today including watching some good football, so I've only had a chance to listen to one album this morning, but what a peach!

Reiner conducting the Chicago Symphony in Rimsky-Korsakoff's "Scheherazade". A true Living Stereo gem from 1960. Mine's not an original "Shaded Dog", but rather a Classic re-master, but man what a great recording and stirring performance!

Today so far, I've listened to the four disk vinyl set of "where the light is, john mayer, live in los angeles", by John Mayer. Great music and very well recorded, if a little sterile sounding. I think some noise suppression may have been used to quiet the sounds from the audience and while it didn't really harm the music, I think some "air" was lost. Still, a very enjoyable recording with excellent silence from the vinyl.

Ok, I know it's no longer morning, but hey, it is Sunday! I just finished listening to John Hiatt's new album, "Same Old Man" (New * West Records) and wanted to share. It is a very very good album of ballads and other Americana music with John's witty wordsmithing. I recommend listening with your significant other. Also, the quality of the recording is very high. It was recorded and mixed by John Hiatt. It was recorded at: "Highway 61 Recording, Tanning and Barbecue, :Dusing Gus Skinas' Sonoma DSD Recording System."

Grandkids are coming over in a little while, so I got some early listening in this morning. This is a really nice double album, with both mono and stereo cuts, taken from three different live performances. Ella may have been a great jazz singer, but for me, Sarah was "it".
This particular album is from Mercury's EmArcy Jazz Series. They mastered this series to, "produce the best monaural (or stereo) quality from available tape and disc sources with the feeling that the understanding and enjoyment of this music takes precedence over technology." This was done in 1977, so I don't think the "disc sources" they mention are CDs! It is amazing to me that those mono cuts from the "disc sources" sound absolutely wonderful.

I had gone to a wedding in Vail yesterday. Driving through the mountains coming down Vail pass with the walls of the canyon growing around me and the aspen just starting to turn my iPod on shuttle mode launched into Grieg's "The Hall of the Mountain King" from Peer Gynt. I knew that would be the first thing I listened to this morning.

So it was! This version is a Cisco reissue of a Decca original with Fjeldstad conduction the London Symphony Orchestra. After that a little more European flair in the form of St. Germain's "Tourist". Now it Ricky Lee Jones "Pop, Pop!"

"Samba Nights" by Peter Pupping

A friend of mine would call this "bubblegum music" but I really enjoy it. It was recorded in Encinitas, CA, and I bought it at a street fair there while on vacation, so it has fond memories for me. It's an eclectic mix of jazz and popular music arranged for acoustic guitar, played by Peter Pupping.

I'm heading to Santa Fe tomorrow morning so I won't have a chance to listen to anything on Sunday Morning. Last night though I listened to a couple of CD's that will be joining me in the car. First was Patricia Barber's latest effort "The Cole Porter Mix". Typical excellent work from Ms. Barber. I especially liked her take on "Just one of Those Things". Also joining me on the road from an earlier thread Tom had posted about their appearance on last weeks Saturday Night Live is The Kings of Leon's most current release "Only By the Night". Great road music.

Well I know is "after the fact" but Sunday morning for me was cruising down Rte #6 on the scooter listening to my compulation Cd that included, Stepenwolf, Marshall Tucker, Allman Bros, Doobies, JJ Cale, Warren Zevon, Dire Straights to name but a few !

I know it wasn't through my Logans but the Harmon Kardon rig on the bike coupled with great scenery and the smell of the pines in the air was pure magic !!

Well it wasn't Sunday but a rare Thursday with no one home but me and my brand new MCD500. I started playing Tori Amos – Under the Pink, Renaissance – 1001 Arabian Nights Part 1, Tangerine Dream – Cyclone, Enigma – MCMXC a.d., Traffic – Gold. I completely got lost in the music and would have continued listening if my peace wasn't broken by the return of the family. I completely lost track of time and couldn't have cared less... A really great day!! :music:

How you liking that MCD500? I've got one on the way for review and everyone is saying it's pretty awesome.

Here's a record for you guys if you are into something a little more Western, a touch on the bluegrass side:

Charlie Haden, "Rambling Boy"

Pat Metheny, Elvis Costello, Bruce Hornsby and Jack Black all help out on various instruments and vocals along with Charlie's daughters.

Normally, something like this is way too mellow for me, but it's recorded
incredibly well and the whole thing is just very nice and smooth.

Just came out yesterday, here's a link on Amazon:

Was it really that good if you were muting it? Sorry - couldn't help but notice it!

I think Alan has just the TV muted (the video is paused too).

Hey, Nora looks good enough there that I could just watch her and enjoy it!
:D

Fact was, my daughter was going to bed, so unfortunately the concert had to end. I muted the sound while I snapped a quick pic. Looking forward to watching the rest later! And yes, Norah is as easy on the eyes as she is on the ears!

So far it's still breaking in; however, right out of the box you know that you've got something special. When I first hooked it up I used the digital out (optical) which bypasses the MCD500's DACs. Even just using the transport it still blew away the Denon 3910 that I had been using. So far all of my CD's sound good, which wasn't the case with the Denon. Perhaps what I like best is not how great well recorded material sounds but how good poorly recorded material sounds. It's given me back much of my music collection.

I'll be looking forward to hearing your impressions.
