Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" is a very good CD. She has a very powerful voice.

Sting's "bring on the Night" is a super live CD.

It's been a system maintenece morning for me. Unplugged everything yesterday, vacuumed the CLS panels this morning, cleaning contacts, hooking everything back up.

Since I got a slow start, and I'm busy working on things it's been an all CD morning. Imagine that - me and no vinyl!?!

Started off with Hugh Masekela's "Hope", a great live disc. I've got the 45rpm version on two black slabs on order, should be here next week. Followed that with the very quirky Mr. Barry Adamson (formerly of Magazine and Nick cave and the Bad Seeds) and his stunning music noir adventure in the form of "Oedipus Schmoedipus". This is one of those really amazing demo disc's nobody's ever heard of that just sounds amazing on the Logans. After that it was the newest effort from Sigor Rus "med sut i eyrum vid spilum endalausf". Yeah, it's a mouthfull, but typical great feedback washed, creshendo thumping alternative music from this very talented band. Right now the John Butler Trio's "Grand National" is spinning. These guys seem like the Australian compliment to Ben Harper, and I mean that as a compliment, it's very good stuff. I have 2 of their albums now and I'm on the prowl for more.

I've got the Trinity Sessions remake and really like it. Curiously, my favorite song on the album is sung by Ryan Adams.

I've got it too and think it's a great retake on an all time classic. Much more electric and the addition of Ryan Adams and Natalie Merchant makes for some really great new versions of the songs. Is the Ryan Adams track you're talking about "200 Miles"? It's possibly my favorite track too. I bought it as a CD/DVD set and the DVD is great fun also.

Also, my favorite Lucinda Williams album is "West", though I haven't heard anything by her that I haven't liked. I've seen her live twice at the Birchmere, in Alexandria, VA., a nice small (less than 500) live music venue.

Steve - Funny you should mention 'West'
You turned me on to LW at Luthor's (Wardsweb) house in San Antonio a while back. Wrap My Head Around That. Sounded fantastic on his Vinyl/tube/horn system.
Since then I've picked up 5 of her albums. Good stuff.

Sorry Mike, I had forgotten that was you. It's hard enough for me to remember names, let alone names and user names! Glad you've gotten into her, she's a great writer and puts a lot of heart into her performances. It doesn't hurt that she surrounds herself with great musicians.

Yeah, that's the one. I've got that same CD/DVD set and liked the DVD. Didn't Natalie Merchant look older and heavier? I always thought of her as some younger thinner lady, but I guess she's been around for quite a while, now.

It's a hangover Sunday morning that has turned into an afternoon hangover.
Too much 100 proof Tequila last night. Cuervo 1800 Select Siver is oh so smooth.

Zappa

I love Zappa. I'm one of those that enjoys his later stuff as much as his earlier recordings. Recordings such as:
Thingfish
Man From Utopia
Jazz From Hell
Joe's Garage
Shiek Urbooty (sp?)
to name a few. I have always thought the guy was pure genius, and very misunderstood by most folks. Should also mention Studio Tan and Sleep Dirt as being great records. BTW if you don't know the story behind those two records its quite interesting.

Sunday morning music? I NEVER listen to music on a Sunday morning. Ever.

Friday night music, after a weeks worth of hard work, with a much earned bottle of red? Now your talking:)

Well apparently a few of us do. I started this thread almost two years ago and as of today it's 60 some pages long, has almost 900 replies and more than 23,500 views!

For my wife and I Friday night is our night to go out to dinner. I get up earlier than everyone else in the house, especially on Sunday, so that's when I have the best opportunity to get in some serious listening!

Tim, your post just reminded me of a used LP store in Toronto with a cutesy name: "Second Vinyl". :D

mmm - Grange on a Friday night. I wish that happened more often, but last Friday night it was a somewhat more affordable Preece Sauv Blanc.

Maybe we need a thread - "Friday Night Quaff"?

Of course, we could always discuss on this thread what we drank while listening to our music at 6am on a Sunday morning!!! HAHAHA.

Last up was Ry Cooder's masterfull blend of western and eastern music on "A Meeting By the River". If you haven't heard this album yet, you simply must. Although it sounds suspect at first to think about blending Cooder's bluesy slide work with Indian themes and sitar and tabla like instumentation, the end result is nothing short of mesmerizing. Originally recorded on the Waterlilly label as an all analog recording this has always been as standout on both CD and SACD, but the new Acoustic Sounds pressing on 45 RPM vinyl is stunning. Absolutely silent surfaces and an increase in the acoustic envelope over the CD that made my jaw drop. If you are into vinyl this one has to be on your short list!

Thanks for the recomendation Tim, my copy arrived today (along with a few other goodies from Elusive Disc's Labor Day sale) this is another one for the "analog skeptics" when doubting vinyls capabilities !

Steve Winwood's new disc Nine Lives is pretty good. Some of it touches on his older stuff (Traffic), some from his 'Highlife' days, at least to my ears. The version I bought came with a documentary/interview DVD.
Cat Power's Jukebox. I've got another by her (them? whatever), and both The Greatest and Jukebox have good music but the recording is poor. Anyone else find this?
Donavon Frankenreiter's Pass it Around. You want Pop, you got it. Pretty good Pop though.

Chan Marshall (that's her in the album cover photo) is a great song writer and an even better interpretive singer. She essentially IS Cat Power. I've got a couple of different CD's including "Jukebox" and I also have "Jukebox" on vinyl, where it sounds less compressed and actually has an image.

My morning was spent listening to a mix of classical, jazz and rock. Started of with Fritz Reiner leading the CSO in a collection of "Overatures and Dances" on a Classic re-issue of an RCA original. After that it was jazz "At Carnegie Hall" thanks to the Thelonious Monk Quartet and John Coltrane. This was originally recorded in 1957, but was essentially "lost" in the Library of Congress vaults until just a few years ago.

Finally up as Beck's great album (my personal favorite) "Sea Change" , presented on 2 great slabs of vinyl. Not only is this album a seminal one for Beck, it's also, finally, a great demonstration disc. I've always loved the music, but found the dynamics lacking on the CD. I know it's available on SACD as well, but I haven't heard that version. What I can tell you is that on vinyl it is absolutely a demonstration quality recording. Deep bass and a wonderfull acoustic with well placed instruments and effects that genuinely support the strong lyrical content. This is one of those albums that is so much better than the CD that it makes the CD sound defective by comparison. Go buy it for the wonderful music, but if you have a turntable, don't miss the vinyl version for the incredible sonics.

Well, via SACD on my somewhat troubled MF Tri-Vista, it sounds absolutely unbelievable. Absolutely right up there on the pinnacle of the recordings I own. The BEST Beck album, I think. I could even tolerate it on a Sunday morning, I guess, but then I never...:D
