Any reissued vinyl of Maceo Parker on the market? I saw the guy live and gave one of the bartenders $20. to hold on to my friend's purse and we stayed on the dance floor the whole show...

Too busy experimenting with the CLS's to post yesterday, but there was a LOT of music being played on vinyl and CD - Rachmaninov, Joe Jackson (Symphonic no less!), Nat King Cole, Bjork, Donovan, Radiohead and Melody Gardot to name a few.

Organ music

I just received a new copy of an old recording that I used to listen to with my dad back in the mid-70's, it’s the SACD reissue of the E. Power Biggs recording of Bach toccatas and Fugues.

My dad had the Quadraphonic edition, and used to play it every other month, he loved this music, and so do I.

Now that my listening room has better acoustical treatments, these organ recordings are a joy to listen to. Before, the room reverb, piled on top of the recordings ambient reverb was just too much, but now, it’s almost like being there.

The SACD is really good, with all the bass extension one expects for an organ recording, and very interesting surround. Its still the original 4 ch mapping (no center).

Oh, make sure you have a good sub ;)

Jonathan, have you ever heard it live? I once had the organist in a large church play it for me a few minutes after Mass had ended. It was awesome, and surprised the people who were still in the church.

Are you familiar wth Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony ?

Hey Guys,

I don't have any pipe organ music, but I've been listening to some really cool Hammond B-3 electric organ stuff. Last night after midnight (Sunday Morning) I was playing some old records that used to belong to an awesome B-3 player. Brother Jack McDuff's "Gin And Orange" Late 60's New York Jazz/Blues feel.

Do you like the Hammond B-3 sound?

Satch

I spent some time this morning listening to things I'm really familiar with as I continue to get a feel for the CLS's. Started with the Sebelius "Sym. No. 5" with Gibson conducting the London Symphony. After that it was the Berlioz "Symphony Fantastique" on the amazing Reference Records version with Kojian conducting the Utah Symphony. Followed that up with one of my favorite jazz artists, Sonny Rollins, this one with the Contemprary Leaders from 1958. Rounded things off with a Virgin import of Roxy Music's "Avalon".

Tim, if you are not familiar with the work, one CD you should get is Carmina Burana, with Ozawa conducting the BSO. I have a feeling that you'd enjoy it. I should do a full review in the recommended recordings section. It is one of my favourites.

Bernard, I have several versions of it, though not the one you recommend. It is indeed one of my favorite pieces of music, so I shall search out this one. Thanks!

Satch, have you always had the Ayre amp or is it a new addition? I don't remember seeing it in your system before. I've been up to the Ayre factory several times listening to equipment and touring their facility. Great group of folks - very dedicated audiophiles. One of their marketing guys used to work at Martin Logan, so I was able to hear their MX-R monoblocks on both a pair of Summits as well as a pair of Avalon Ediolon Diamonds that they have in their listening room. They make GREAT solid state amplifiers!

EDIT: Satch - is your system in the "Members Systems" section? I can't find it.

Bernard, yes, I've heard much of the Organ repertoire live, and although many moons ago (the late 60's) quite a few in European cathedrals.

I love the Saint-Saens, I have a recording of it on CD, and would love to find a HiDef version.

BTW- I have an extra copy of the 'Bach organ works' DVD-Audio. with Hans-Andre Stamm at the keyboard. If a club member is interested, please drop me a PM. This disc is out-of-print and hard to come by, so I thought I'd share here first.

Hey Tim,

John from Premiere-Audio gave me a great deal on the Ayre V-5xe back around Feb. it was a demo and I got the full 5 yr.warranty. Thats also where I got the Vistas and Depth i & A.Q. cables. The Ayre V-5xe was listed Class A in the April Stereophile mag. whatever that means. This high-end audio stuff is all new to me. :)

I also have the Tillson-Thomas and the Kegel, and like this one best. As well, I have the other two in the trilogy (Catulli Carmina & Trionfi di Afrodite), both by Kegel. Not as good as Carmina Burana, but still enjoyable.

Jon, it is avaialble as a Living Stereo re-issue on SACD with Munch conducting the Boston Symphony. It's a performance many believe to be among the best. I have it and can attest to it's brilliance.

I also have it on a 4 disk 45 rpm heavy VINYL Classic pressing as well if you really want HiDef!!!!

Kind of a busy morning being Mothers Day and all, so I've opted for the "convenience" of CD today. Started off with a couple of great Reference Records discs, the Rachmaninoff "Symphonic Dances" and the wonderfull "Copland 100th Aniversary" disc - some truely bombastic system demonstration music on both of these, and yes, the CLS CAN do large scale symphonic music! Right now it's one of my favorite female artists (and she also happens to be totally hot) Heather Nova's "Siren".

Continuing my recommendations for Insomniacs......

Here's a CD I got from Amazon a couple of days ago. "Après un rêve" by Gabriel Fauré, Georges Bizet, Ernest Chausson, Claude Debussy, and Henri Duparc. Played on the cello by Mischa Maisky; piano accompaniment by Daria Hovora.

It includes a number of well-known and not-so-well-known pieces, including "Kaddish" by Ravel - he set to music the Jewish Prayer for the Dead. Here the cello "sings" the prayer. It is mournful but beautiful. I also have a vocal version, sung by soprano Sumi Jo; also enjoyable.
