Arvo Part: Alina

Here is true Sunday morning music, for the wee hours, if you are an insomniac and need some gentle music to calm you down. "Alina" by Arvo Part.

One composition on the disc entitled "Spiegel Im Spiegel" (Mirror in Mirror) has three different versions: Violin and Piano; Cello and Piano; Violin and Piano. It is a gentle theme that gets repeated/mirrored on an interplay between the instruments. I first heard it while visiting a relative in California last year, and could not get enough of it. It is incredibly, hauntingly, beautiful. So I bought it. It is available on Amazon for under 10 bucks.

Love the Prog

For those that like their rock a bit on the heavier side, with great prog riffs (basically, if you like Porcupine tree’s heavier stuff or Dream Theater, you'll dig this).
Featuring Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess, Tony Levine and John Petrucci, this line up does some wonderful prog metal work.

Liquid Tension Experiement 2

You speak the truth brother. You also mentioned Porcupine Tree, how about Spock's Beard, and the Flower Kings.

This swings and it swings HARD! If you like the big band sound you will dig this. The AP reissue (APJ 023) of the Basie classic album.

Roger Waters

Here is a CD that every ML owner should have. MUsically, it will grow on you after a few serious listening sessions. It is recorded with the very interesting "Q" Sound. I own a few other titles with this technique, but none quite as attention grabbing as this one. I didn't realize the complexity of this recording until a few years ago I was at a prominent audio hang in Chicago, and someone threw this on as a demonstration disc. After being blown away,:eek:I was told that if you could get your system to accurately reproduce this "magic", you probably had everything dialed in pretty good. Well, right he was. After some difficult tweaking and maneuvering over several days I got it pretty close and the sonics revealed on this disc began to appear. I encourage all to check-out this disc, the "Q" Sound is truly amazing when everything in your system is dialed in.
Other titles include:
* Sting - Soul Cages
* Soundtrack - Robinhood the Prince of Thieves

Copy and Paste, and add to the list if you want and add comments. Would be cool to hear about other titles. Also we could all chime in with what is special about the "Q" Sound tech. on each disc.:D

I will add, via edit what I heard on this disc later.

Are you sure? I got this CD because of reports of the insane sound (and yes, it does sound very good). But I can't stand the music. Same with DSOTM.

I'll probably get flamed, but I'd hardly call it music - it's bizzare squealing and whaling combined with kids' sound effects. Weird.

More prog...

Porcupine Tree and Steve Wilson (PT band leader/producer) have been working on re-issues in multi-channel, high-rez surround of their back catalog.

The latest installment shipped direct from the UK this week, the long anticipated re-issue of their 2000 release called 'Lightbulb Sun'.

This DVD-Audio release is once again, an amazing piece of production and sound engineering. Steve is a genius at delivering very enveloping soundfields, with intricate cross-mixing into the various channels. There are some drum sequences where each hit of the Tom is in a different channel that totally enhances the music and rhythmic values.

The music itself is more akin to the 'Stupid Dream' style of PT's repertoire. So don't expect the heaviness of FoBP or Deadwing.

Standout tracks are "Shesmovedon" and "hatesong".

The DVD-A should be available stateside in the coming weeks, if not, the link above takes you to Steve's direct publisher.

Oh, and I got the bonus CD with 2 extra tracks since I'm such a PT fan, I pre-ordered like three months ago direct from the UK. Unfortunately, they are now out of the bonus discs.

On the contrary, candid comments are always appreciated. I was going to pick up a copy, until I read your comments.

Wow! Really amazing voice. Thanks for the recommendation. On youtube I also enjoyed her singing "Bred Dina Vida Vingar", which I first heard on "Cantate Domino" on the Proprius label - also recommended.

As Ken stated I have a few recordings from her(from Ken) and she is alluring ! Her rendition of "Dream a little Dream" is well recorded.

Man, I'd forgotten just how brilliant this album is. Puts me in JUST the right mood for dealing with the public (currently have a crap job in retail) on this sunny Sunday afternoon...

Zappa

The first concert I saw was Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention in 1968 at what then was called the Orlando Sports Arena. I was 11...

Well..............If you like Pink Floyd I still think you will enjoy this. The comment about it being "squealing and whaling" noise quite frankly I don't get at all. You can hear all the influences he brought to Pink Floyd and then later took to his own solo stuff. Another great one The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, features such greats as Eric Clapton and David Sanborn. Not earth shattering or ground breaking just wonderful stylings brought to the table by these two very identifiable musicians. To each his own I guess. But seriously give it a chance, it will have your 2 channel system doing some things that no other recording will be able to. And don't get me wrong as I mentioned earlier "musically it will grow on you" if given the chance.
