New music for me.. My landlord introduced me to Patricia Barber's music and I went out right away to pick up a CD/SACD or whatever I could find..

Found 'Companion' on SACD. Love her version of 'The Beat Goes On', 'Black Magic Woman' and 'You Are My Sunshine'. Amazing.
I now have more on order from Amazon.

You should hear her live. If you are in Chicago on a Monday night be sure to let the Chicago crowd know and we all go to see her.

If you have not already ordered them get Modern Cool, Nightclub, and a Fortnight in France, you will love them.

Kirk Whalum

The writing by Mike Reid (vocalist) on this CD is wonderful, very uplifting. For those that are unfamiliar with Kirk, this was one of his commercial flops (so I was told) He is more of a smooth jazz sort of guy. This recording was a bit different, very mellow and reflective. The vocal tunes are a real joy as Mike Reid has a deep baritone quality to his voice. You don't run into this much in the mellow popish vein, but it really works on these tunes. And Kirk sounds great on the Tenor.

Well..............If you like Pink Floyd I still think you will enjoy this.
I am not a fan of Pink Floyd, so I think I'll pass. I liked rock when I was in my teens, but lost all interest in it when I hit my twenties and discovered classical, jazz. etc. Pink Martini is more my style now.

i picked up a couple of tickets for their concert this june here in vancouver. great little group. the lead singer is now doing solo work and tours on top of her PM work. and we are all the better for it :)

I have not read every post in this discussion thread, so I may be injecting something that has already been said.

I find the Bob Marley Legends CD (remastered) to be a very pleasant Sunday-morning listen.

Some of the tracks are not up to audiophile snuff; but the overall tone, pace, and music has made it a touchstone recording for over a generation. Thanks go out to Will Smith and his latest movie, I am Legend, for highlighting this excellent work for the next generation.

When the Cello Sings a Lullaby

Here is a CD for insomniacs. Mischa Maisky on the cello, accompanied by Pavel Gililov on the piano. The CD consists of some really gorgeous music which can be considered lullabies (including Brahms' Lullaby and the Gounod and Schubert Ave Marias). Very few of the pieces were originally written for cello and piano; the majority are arrangements of music written for other media.

Taken from the enclosed booklet (love it!):

"If some people wax lyrical about the cello's masculine timbre and its baritone or tenor voice, others are turned on by the rounded, feminine curves of its form, which may be embraced in the act of playing with an intimacy denied to all other instrumentalists".

otherwise known as......"The Fondle Factor"

For me I kinda like watching Olga Kern's butt while she sits and plays the piano !

Michael Buble?

Happened to catch the CBS Sunday Morning feature on Michael Buble this am. I've heard good things about him, but don't have any of his albums. I searched the forum here, but couldn't find any specific recommendations? What albums would be good to start with?

he's only had a couple of albums, the first one was the one that "put him out there" and his release a few months back got some reserved reviews, but it still seems to get the awards...

i'd start at the beginning and get his first album.

I got up early today to spend some quality time with my new CLS's and didn't emerge until over 4 hours later. Started out with the Milhaud "La Creation Du Monde" with Munch conduction the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The obvious references to American Jazz led me to Louis Armstrong on "I've Got the World on a String". Followed that up with Hank Crawford's "Soul of the Ballad" on a MoFi pressing, then Nat King Cole's "Just One of Those Things" on another stunning Pure Pleasure re-issue. Next up was the UHQR MoFi of Cat Stephen's "Tea For the Tillerman" one of my all time favorite albums. Just finished up with Bjork's eponymous effort after her departure from the Sugarcubes.

Now that I've finally acquired a blu-ray player, I think I'll pick that one up! I'm not able to listen to my home system, as I'm sitting outside of my mother-in-law's rest home, in Giddings, Texas. However, I'm listening to some great tunes over the JBL stereo in my Tundra.

After being critical of "whaling" in this same thread, I can't believe I was listening to a different sort of whaling. Kate Miller-Heidke, "Little Eve".

You'll either love it or hate it.......a live performance on YouTube...
