Eva Cassidy day for me...
I went to Borders yesterday and dropped a Benjamin on music. Came away with a LOt of recommendations from this forum. Eva Cassidy (Songbird and Live at blues Alley), the Mozart Horn concerto disc that Logano recommended, Madeleine Peyroux's Half the Perfect World, and the new Arcade Fire DC (I got the "limited edition" veersion in the holographic box--VERY cool package). Plus I picke up a DVD of the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" concert (which I saw in part at Dan's ML Meet in MD last month).
I've been an Eva Cassidy fan from pretty much the beginning. I saw her a few times in some of the small Annapolis-area clubs back in the early '90s and I can say that she put on an astoundingly heartfelt performance every time. Her passing was a tremendous loss to the DC-area music scene.
I was turned on to Eva by a dear friend, Kirby, who was a blacksmith, custom knife maker, jewelry maker/goldsmith, and an avid music fan and motorcycle rider. (He also turned me on to the VM Bhatt series of recordings). Kirby and I were like brothers seperated at birth, and shared MANY interests, including music, stereo gear, and the arts in general. Anyway, Kirby was, among other things, a Motorcycle Safety Instructor for the state of MD, and one Saturday morning in July 2002, on his way to the Frederick MD DMV to teach a class, he was killed by an unlicensed, uninsured motorist who made an illegal turn into an intersection and struck his bike. At Kirby's funeral, his wife asked me to run the sound system (he knew we shared an unhealthy fascination with stereo gear and music) and the last song we played was Eva's "Over the Rainbow", which was Kirby's favorite song. As you can imagine, by the chorus, I was crying like a baby. To be honest, just writing this makes me a little teary-eyed.
Every time I hear Eva's version of "Rainbow" it reminds me of two people who meant a lot to me, and who's passings were both a tremendous loss to the DC-area arts community.
But I'll tell you what, hearing that song on my Sequels makes me think tha tKirby would approve of my current setup. Too bad he's not around to hear how great some of his favorite music sounds on it.
I think maybe this evening I'll have to lift a wee dram of Tully in his memory...
