Bach Edition (well part of it) !

Last week my wife gave me a very nice birthday present, which I'm exploring : J.-S. Bach's Complete Works (155 CD box, Brilliant Classics).

Earlier, il listened to the 5 Brandenburg Concertos.

Right now: Orchestral Suites 1 & 2
Next in line: Orchestral Suites 3 & 4

Very enjoyable performances and recordings !

Having fun ! ;)

Wow I haven't heard erasure in the last decade! There's a few memories...

Done with the dots, now for something more upbeat!

Boom Boom Satellites / Full of Elevating Pleasures
Boom Boom Satellites / Out Loud

Unfortunately both of those are through rhapsody not full quality.

Just got Lucinda Williams - West.

Never heard any of her stuff. Assumed it was country and I'm not really into that (maybe a little bluegrass at most). I've read a number of good reviews so I had to check it out. Only one non-critical listen so far, need more time to pass judgement.

Now that's what I call , a loving wife !! congrats !
Thank you, she's indeed a keeper ! ;)

Now listening to Bach's Violin Concertos (CD number 5 of 155) ! Cool, only 150 Cds left to listen to (in that collection) !

Sade: Promise; Van Morrison: Poetic Champions Compose on a lovely SoCal morning.

Listened to the new Blackfield II album by Blackfield (AKA Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree fame).

Great rock album.

Listened to Sarah Brightman - La Luna in SACD 5.1.

Astounding bass and Mid-Bass in that recording. A great demo of current system capabilities.

Right now it's Lebrune "Oboe Concertos Nr. 3, 5 & 6" on a Channel Classics SACD. Earlier it was the Elgar "Cello Concerto in E Minor"on EMI vinyl, which is actually an extension of Saturday night music for me.

My wife and I went to the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Beottcher Hall last night because they were doing the Elgar and I'd never heard it live. I'd heard the concert anouncement on the radio on the way home from work Friday night, so I got on line yesterday and bought tickets.

The performance was mesmerizing, intoxicating, superlative and sublime. I was literally moved to tears at a number of points. The CSO has become a major player in my mind over the past several years, and their recordings under Marin Allsop of the Lauridson cycle as well as the Bernstein Chekenshire Psalms are good indicators of where they are heading. We had a spectacular evening capped off with some after event coctails sitting out on the patio of Lola (a favorite local haunt), taking in a breathtaking view of downtown Denver on a perfect spring night.

Today listening to the same work it made me realize once again that no matter how good I think my system is, there is NOTHING that sounds as good as real live music. If you haven't done it for a while, get out there and support live music!:D

Eva Cassidy day for me...

I went to Borders yesterday and dropped a Benjamin on music. Came away with a LOt of recommendations from this forum. Eva Cassidy (Songbird and Live at blues Alley), the Mozart Horn concerto disc that Logano recommended, Madeleine Peyroux's Half the Perfect World, and the new Arcade Fire DC (I got the "limited edition" veersion in the holographic box--VERY cool package). Plus I picke up a DVD of the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" concert (which I saw in part at Dan's ML Meet in MD last month).

I've been an Eva Cassidy fan from pretty much the beginning. I saw her a few times in some of the small Annapolis-area clubs back in the early '90s and I can say that she put on an astoundingly heartfelt performance every time. Her passing was a tremendous loss to the DC-area music scene.

I was turned on to Eva by a dear friend, Kirby, who was a blacksmith, custom knife maker, jewelry maker/goldsmith, and an avid music fan and motorcycle rider. (He also turned me on to the VM Bhatt series of recordings). Kirby and I were like brothers seperated at birth, and shared MANY interests, including music, stereo gear, and the arts in general. Anyway, Kirby was, among other things, a Motorcycle Safety Instructor for the state of MD, and one Saturday morning in July 2002, on his way to the Frederick MD DMV to teach a class, he was killed by an unlicensed, uninsured motorist who made an illegal turn into an intersection and struck his bike. At Kirby's funeral, his wife asked me to run the sound system (he knew we shared an unhealthy fascination with stereo gear and music) and the last song we played was Eva's "Over the Rainbow", which was Kirby's favorite song. As you can imagine, by the chorus, I was crying like a baby. To be honest, just writing this makes me a little teary-eyed.

Every time I hear Eva's version of "Rainbow" it reminds me of two people who meant a lot to me, and who's passings were both a tremendous loss to the DC-area arts community.

But I'll tell you what, hearing that song on my Sequels makes me think tha tKirby would approve of my current setup. Too bad he's not around to hear how great some of his favorite music sounds on it.

I think maybe this evening I'll have to lift a wee dram of Tully in his memory...

Richard, what a great story that speaks so eloquently to the power of music. Thank you for that.

I think I'll throw on some Eva myself and give a thought to you and your friend Kirby this evening when I lift a wee dram myself.

I second that.
I'm sure everyone here has certain songs that bring
back memories of people or expierences in our lives.

Kirby sounds like a guy I would have got along with,
Music and Motorcycles, don't get much better than that.

My cellphone is running the newest version of windows mobile, and my pc is on xpsp2. So last night as I am bumming around on the net, My pc and phone decide to tell me that daylite savings time is in effect, so now it is 445 am! UGH! I am a bit intoxicated off of some delicious might I add, balvenie double wood. But nontheless, I ask myself didn't we just have the savings time?

Technically it is sunday morning....and my mood abruptly shifts from some of the Drum and Bass tracks my Dj friend forwarded to me, to some more soothing sounds of Sigur Ros, to help facilitate sleep.

Woke up and still in the slow moving mood, popped in the Norah Jones - Come away with me SACD. What a good way to wake up on a sunday morning.
