I live close enough to my office that I can ride my bike,
but the narrow county roads make that suicidal. So I love
the idea of the SmartCar as a throw-away daily commuter.
My nice new Saturn Aura would get fewer miles each year
and last much longer.

But for a car I would never drive more that 20 miles a day,
I'd prefer a full-electric version. I'm no greenie, but e-cars
eliminate the two major hassles of car ownership: regular
engine maintenance and trips to the pump.

Unfortunately, the price of the SmartCar holds me back.
They're just expensive enough to make me hesitate. If they
had an e-car under $10K, I'd probably buy without much
thought or worry.

And here's my favorite SmartCar...

I like the picture and in particular NOT the car!

What ever happened to the SMART Roadster?

I test drove their roadster a few years back. It was a beautiful car and handled OK. Not very fast mind you but not slow either. Felt solid enough for what it was. Unfortunately the engines are too big to qualify as K cars here in Japan so you get hit by hefty taxes and inspection costs, but not big enough to give you any real power. I decided in the end to keep my old but trusty 1996 Z3 1.9. Besides it has slightly more trunk room.

I love that they put the car in a van at the end.

The Hayabusa is also an engine choice for the Lotus-7 replicas.

One of my neighbors works at a Mercedes dealership in Ann Arbor. The Smart he took home did not have the paddle shifters. I don't know why.

I prefer motorbikes, but I like the little silver Smart car...
