For context, let me say that I did a little research and found that Roger Sanders offers a "panel and crossover upgrade" for his Innersound Eros electrostatic speakers for $3,000. A few things to consider about this: Innersound is a defunct company that was once run by Roger but went under when he took on an unscrupulous business partner. Roger is under no legal duty to continue servicing Innersound products, but he still does it anyway . . . because it is the RIGHT thing to do (Take a lesson from that, ML!). Roger is a very small company, with just himself and a few employees, not a big multi-national corporate-owned company like ML. I don't think Roger sold that many Innersound speakers, certainly not the way ML is selling tons of electrostats, so he would have to purchase components in much smaller quantities and simply not have the buying power that ML has for parts. Roger's panel does not use metal grids like ML, but rather they use his own proprietary "high-value insulators" to carry the voltage charge. From what I know, I would conclude that panel construction for his panels is a much more complex and time-consuming process than construction of ML's panels. Also, Roger is not just offering "replacement" panels, but rather an upgrade to his latest "Ultrastat" panel technology and he includes a sophisticated electronic crossover upgrade in the deal. Thus, the panel and electronics are both upgraded for this price. Finally, Roger claims that he has never had one of his Ultrastat panels fail and they show no output loss over many years of use; so if you buy one of his speakers, you aren't looking at mandatory replacement of the panel in ten or fifteen years.
All of these factors confirm my suspicions that ML is intentionally gouging its customers with these price increases. If they included upgraded electronics in the price, perhaps it would make more sense. But charging thousands of dollars for a pair of panels that consists of two pieces of stamped metal sandwiching a piece of mylar film that takes a trained person maybe thirty minutes to put together? Ludicrous.
I can't recommend Roger Sanders speakers highly enough. They have much better imaging and soundstaging in the sweetspot than Martin Logans, while giving up a little quality on off-axis listening. Anyone considering spending money on one of Martin Logan's higher end electrotats owes it to themselves to audition one of Roger's speakers. He offers a free in-home trial, as well.
