I bet 99.9% of the people on thist site have systems that sound 1000% better then what the big store chains sell.
In the UK, we have two big chains - 'Richer Sounds' and 'SevenOaks Sound and Vision'.
Richer Sounds - sell cheap cr*p with a few bits of mid-fi (Cambridge Audio) thrown in, staff (genuinely) think they're selling real hi-fi at a bargain price. Demo rooms are either not there at all, or so small they're useless
SevenOaks - Sell a bigger range, from cheap cr*p through to some reasonable hi-fi (Arcam, hi-end Marantz, Denon etc), but employ teenage staff who don't understand the product, and don't care about the customer. . .
So, if you want decent hi-fi in the UK, the only place to buy is a specialist. Problem is, most specialists only carry a limited range of brands. So you end up auditioning at three or four shops, in different listening rooms, to find what you want.
It's all worth it in the end though!!
Cheers,
David
(Happy with the system after days of auditioning different gear).
