As most know I'm a huge railroad fan and a huge supporter of 'Operation Lifesaver' , grade crossing saftey and awareness. The following video clip demonstrates, albeit sadly why you loose at a grade crossing.

Take notice of how long the train took to stop after going into emergency, and this was a relatively 'lightweight' passenger train, you could easily tripple the distance for a large frt train !

One must also add the engineer of the Amtrak train, for myself, having a brother who is a locomotive engineer having gone through a similar scenario, it stays with you the rest of your life.

that's really to bad the sad fact is that it takes much less than a train to kill you and everyone else in your car so you really need to pay attention. I personally feel as though the drivers ed courses in high school are **** pour and need serious reform kids or should I say young adults need to be able to show total control and responsibility over the the cars they drive and should not receive a licences until they prove without a doubt that they are capable and mature enough to drive with precision and authority.what we do is akin to handing a loaded gun to a toddler and hoping that he shoots in a safe direction.looking back I would never have given me a drivers licenses when I was only 16 never ! it's really sad to see these young peoples lives taken so quickly and brutally.

Operation Lifesaver, of which I spoke about earlier is near and dear to my heart for my dads best friend was one of the founding fathers along with other railroad men of the Burlington Northern.

All the Class 1 railroads actively participate in the operation of trains with guests from various areas of Gov't, law enforcement, public and private school sectors as well. All this as a public awareness to grade crossing saftey.

The attached pic (with my dad in the foreground) is of a recent excursion conducted by the NS this summer on a trip from Harrisburg, Pa to Hagerstown, Md and back.

1. I was driving with a friend downtown Ann Arbor when we saw a young black man walking the track with his I-Pod on.

2. There is a $500 fine for walking on the tracks or crossing at at non-crossing spot. People walk around the sign near Argo Pond Dam saying; No Trespassing. The sign it's self has never lasted more than a week before it's torn down by vandals. The Amtrack flies by this same spot several times a day and several more times at night.

Oh my...this one was lucky !

Another recent mishap outside of Crawford, Ne, the tanker truck ran a grade crossing. Take a look at the Hazmat placard....'1203' , for those that don't know...that's Gasoline ! Also lucky that the oncoming train from the other direction was not any further along !

Again I say......Stop...Look..Listen and LIVE !

Detroit -- A top fire department official minced no words in criticizing a firefighter who parked a truck on a set of train tracks while responding to an accident. The fire truck was subsequently hit by a train.

I live in a Railroad town where there are both north/ south tracks and east/ west and at least once a year there are collisions and they neve turn out good for the vehicle. and as Dave mentioned it is also something that the engineer never forgets.

As George mentioned recently a Detroit firee truck that was responding to an accident both the truck and a police car parked on the tracks.

That accident just reaks of stupidity, even the comments from the Fire Chief are pretty lame. If that clown (fire engine driver) keeps his job it will be a disgrace.
