Late comment, but I just saw this thread for the first time: I always thought that cigars were rolled on the thighs of Cubana beauties !

Bernard, there was this knock dead beautifell Cuban girl that served the tastiest expresso in Ybor city, along with a great cigar.......... I know I'm still savoring the Phillies victory but I'm allready thinking about spring training !!

Dave, many years ago I was at a restaurant in Ybor City where they did a floor show...so I know what you mean by "knock dead beautiful Cuban girl"
Was at my local shop today (watching the snow fall !) when the rep for 'La Flor Dominicana' came in, gave us all nice Double Ligero Robusto.
For those that enjoy a well made full bodied smoke this one will please your palette, consistently good right to the end !

Did you get a buzz? I've heard that the Double Ligero
"Chisel" shape is considered to be one of the strongest
stogies around. I'm almost afraid to try it.
I tried the "Lot 23" maduro last weekend in the local shop.
Torpedo shape which was very well constructed. Despite a
very prolonged and careful lightup, the first 1/2-inch was
upleasantly bitter. It smoothed quickly and was overall a
very "earthy" flavor. Ideal draw with dense white smoke.
Unfortunately, the strong bitterness returned around about
the 2/3 point and I put it down. Overall, I didn't care for it
much. I drink my coffee black and my scotch neat, but I
like a touch more sweetness and complexity than this one
gave. But it was unique, which is fun too.
I picked up a camaroon "Lot 23" and a "La Aroma de Cuba
Edicion Especiale" to try next.
The local store didn't stock the others from my "island list".
I especially wanted to try the Oliva Series G before buying.
But since most of the stogies on my list are so highly
rated, I think I'm safe to just start ordering boxes off the
web.
Brian, sorry to hear that you didn't like the "Lot 23", myself having smoked several boxes over the last six months I don't recall the issues you had.
Regarding the La Flor Diminicana, I enjoyed another one after dinner tonite while working out in the garage on my snowmobile and the only "buzz" I got was when I smashed my finger against the exhaust ! I suppose that I'm so used to strong, full bodied cigars, of which I prefer it just didn't hit me.

A friend gave me a Double Ligero. It is most certainly not an "out and about" cigar. You probably want to be sitting and fed.
MDS: Cubans aren't everything that's out there, not by a long shot. The industry has pretty much entirely moved on from when Cubans were the best available.

Hi Guys. I agree, a good cigar is one of the great pleasures of life. I have enjoyed them most of my adult life - always outdoors, in moderation, don't inhale and see no reason to give them up. I went to grad school in Miami in the late 70s (same time I discovered high end audio) and used to walk down Calle Ocho to buy cigars from the rollers. In actual fact, most of them were lousy (bad tobacco) but I enjoyed the personal interaction and using my bad spanish. I was primarily a Fuente guy, but was seriously annoyed when cigars became trendy and the prices went up by 400%. Then I started traveling a lot overseas, and got into Cubans. Though they have had a lot of quality control issues in the last decade, I still think a great Cuban is in a class by itself. My favorite "legal" is probably the Fuente Hemingway Classic, but since my Cuban mail order source has many choices much cheaper than the dried out Fuentes at our local tobacconist, I usually just go Cuban.
Truly, to sit outside on a warm summer's evening, after a great meal, with a fine cigar and good conversation......well, it just doesn't get much better.

I am going to go slightly against the grain and say that I do not think that Cuba makes the best of cigars. I think that other countries have slightly better conditions for tobacco growing and much better quality control I also think the growers and rollers have greatly prospered away from Fidel Castro . my favorites are from Nicaragua and the Dominican republic. I will agree that the surge of popularity that started in the 90's did hurt things for the true cigar lover.

Mark, I agree and seeing that you are living in Colorado, combine that with a great evening view it is trully superb !
I have enjoyed so many great smokes in my thirty two plus years of cigars that for me at least I've got my favorites from not only Cuba (Monte #2, Bolivar Churchill) but Nicaragua, Hondurous as well as DR.
My everyday smoke which you will always find in my humidor is Lew Rothman's El Ray DelMundo Robusto Larga, a Honduran gem that is full bodied and reasonably priced under $4 a stick.
Enjoyed one of my favorite 'everyday smokes' today at the shop, an El Ray del Mundo, Robusto Larga. A superb four dollar smoke.
It's gonna be a busy month at J&M Cigar this month, we've got Rocky Patel, La Flor Dominicana and Altadis all coming in to do events.

Prep for the future
My Vinotemp wine cooler fridge arrived yesterday. I ordered
directly from Vinotemp. They claim free shipping, but they
just pad the price to cover it. But even at $200, it's an
extremely good deal.
As you can see, I am now prepping the box for cigar storage.
The maximum thermostat setting for this unit is 66F, and
the temps hovers around 67 which is almost ideal for long
term cigar storage with minimal beetle risk. The white stuff
in the cheap dollar-store ceramic dishes is humidity beads
from Heartfelt Industries. The top dish holds 1lb of 70%
beads while the lower holds 1lb of 65% beads. My intent is
to average out around 68%. The humidity drops drastically
each time the fridge door is opened, and a larger mass of
beads provides a quicker recovery. I plan to open the door
at least once a month to avoid mold.
By the way, the digital hygrometers from Heartfelt Ind are
a waste of money. They are really awful. I'm on my way to
buy another Radio Shack hygro like the photo. They can't
be beat.
Oh, there's also a stick of spanish cedar which I soaked in
hot water to add some quick humidiy and aroma. Also an
"Oust" battery-powered fan to move air at the bottom.
Anyway, I'm ready to fill-er-up! I've ordered a box of
Padron 1964 Anniversary Imperial Maduro which should
arrive early next week. If that goes well, I'll order more
boxes on my "island list".

We had the Rocky Patel tasting at the shop the other night and it was excellent, buy a box, get six additional cigars and a quality butane lighter for free !

I've become more of a 68/68 guy over the years.
70% RH is just too cool for my tastes. I often must retouch
and/or relight 70% stogies, especially the high-end Fuentes.
I believe they should be smoked at around 66% to 68% RH.
I'm currently rethinking how to use the humidity beads.
I think that my inital approach is wrong. Placing a tray
of 70% beads and a tray of 65% beads is unlikely to
maintain a 68% RH. Instead, I suspect the beads will
"fight" each other. The 65% beads will constantly absorb
water until they become saturated and useless. Meanwhile,
the 70% beads will constantly release water until they
become totally dry and require recharging.
Therefore, I've decided to use only the 70% beads. If the
the RH goes too high in the Summer, I'll switch to the 65%
beads.
Funny you mention the RP Decade. I've smoked several
Decades and love them. They're right up there with the
Sun Growns as my favorite RPs. Trouble is that they're
often hard to find. Thankfully, my local store just got a
large shipment of all my favorites and I was able to get
4 Decades. I plan to order a box or two after the
Padrons arrive.
I lucked into a bunch of rare Fuentes this week: a collector's
tin of 3 Forbidden X, 4 Opus X, and 10 Añejos. Normally,
these things disappear the same day they arrive so I never
even see them. This year was my turn to load up. Woohoo!
I've been restocking with singles the past month and with
these impulse buys, the desktop box is now full to the brim.
All new buys must go into the new "fridgedor".

Whoot! Santa was here early! The first part of my 10-year
Stogie Stockpile arrived...
Fuente Don Carlos #2, but they are backordered and will
ship in a week or two. No biggee.
Since it was a large order, the TexCigar owner surpised me
and added six Tatuaje for free. I had to him mentioned that
I couldn't get these locally and wanted to try them someday.
The order process with TexCigar was awesome. Excellent
prices too. Highly recommended.
Soon as I pay this Visa bill off (owie!), I plan to place another
large order. The fridgidor is not quite half full so far.
