I have been a Martin Logan owner (Quests) for many years but have just joined the club.

I recently picked up a pair of Prodigy's and would like some advice from other owners. Can someone tell me how the speaker is suppose to sound in a correctly setup room.

The speaker is obviously move a lost of air and create a huge soundstage. Vocals have an incredible amount of body but I feel there is a bit too much bass. Some CDs that I thought had a more pronounced guitar on the Quests now seem to place the guitar a bit back in the mix and bring the bass tones forward.

Is the speaker normally a bit bass heavy or does it simply require more room treatment than the Quests. Or could the panels be down a bit in level and how could I tell for sure. From the serial number they were made in 2000. How long does the panel last on this model.

I am driving the Prodigys with bridged Classe 25 amps.

Can't help you... All I had before my Prodigy were Ascent and Aerius i and the Prodigy were a huge step up from both of those... My local ML dealer always said the Prodigy were better than Odyssey but not so much so that they were worth the extra money. So, he did not upgrade from his personal Quest's (I think that is what he had anyway), but then the Summit came out and he jumped on those...

I wish I could offer more help, but I am out on this one...

Good luck.

Hmmmm, just thinking loud, if you have too much bass energy, could be because you have them too close to theirs back wall, or could be weak panels. Sometimes cables can work. Try to use silver interconnects. Prodigies are super great sounding speakers!!! Hope this can help...happy listening,
Roberto.

Prodigy bass

There was a point when I had too much bass.

As I recall it was mainly a placement issue, as Roberto indicates.

Tell us about your room and current speaker placement in that room.

You should be able to click on the link in my signature and see my setup.

Even with two Depths I don't have too much or too heavy base.

The base is fast, clean, dynamic, and very tuneful. Not boomy and not there when it shouldn't be.

I think my room is large enough ie. about 5.5 metres by 7 metres and the speakers are1.5 metres out from the wall behind and 1 metre from the side.

Since my original post I have borrowed a sound level metre and done a few tests. Not only is the sound a bit bass heavy but the imaging seems to be skewed to one side (at first the right and then the left after I swapped the speakers. )

I disconnected the bass jumpers and put on a mono CD and measured the maximum volume in a 20 sec piece of music ( I don't have a test CD). I did five tests on each speaker and then swapped the speaker cable and did another five tests.

The tests show that the right speaker always measures a bit over 4db lower than the left at a distance of 0.5 metres. I don't think the sound metre is the best but I think I have done enough tests to detemine that the panel has lost volume. I have vacuumed a number of times but the result is the same.

I have a warranty on the speaker and have just contacted the dealer. He is going to get back to me on Monday about replacement panels.

Even with this problem the speakers sound quite good. I am especially impressed with the quality of the vocals which are absolutely huge and lifelike.

Hola. My guess are weak panels. Ask your dealer regarding your problem, they have a lot of experience with little problems like yours. Happy listening,
Roberto.
