So Dave,

How do you like the sound of that little Jolida? I have heard them once on some Vistas and was impressed with the sound for the money, although it was a little euphonic. I imagine it is smooth and warm, but not nearly so much as that 21 year old bottle of Balvenie.

Hello Rich, My Jolida is a great little performer, I had originally bought it to drive my Klipsch RF-7's and liked it so much I new it would be a keeper even when I sold the RF-7's. I am contemplating having some "mods' done to it (coupling caps, grid resistors, diodes) by Response Audio out of Endicott, NY. Bill Baker is considered the "Jolida Guru". Right now it's stock with the exception of rolling in some GE 12AX7's and Mullard NOS 12AT7's.

as far as the Balvenie, your are right, smooooooooth !

I don't understand the reason for a headphone amp.

It makes them sound better... just like a speaker. I had a Class A Headamp GS-1 before powering the Sennheiser HD650 headphones and there was very substantial difference between the regular output of my soundcard or receiver vs the the Headamp. Hard as it may be to believe, but there's a cult out there on purely headphones. www.HeadFi.org

I used to go to that site, but after a while, I realized that no matter how good headphones are, speakers are still the way to go for me. I sold all my headphone gear and bought my first ML Mosaics... this was about 1.5 years ago.

Anyway, I think that if you ever wanted to get into headphones, you can foray into headfi.org and check it out. You can get your hands on a pair of great headphones (like the Sennheiser HD650, the AKG 701, the Sony SA5000, the AT Woodies, etc...) and get a good amp (tubed or solid state Class A) and see if you like it for nighttime listening.

If you dont, you can always sell it back for no loss... the market resale is pretty solid on those things.

A 300 ohm headphone like the Sennheisers 650 turn a dedicated headphone amp into a necessity. These babies are something that you really can't hook up to your iPod...they claim a frequency response of 16Hz-39kHz, ±3dB, but to achieve this u need a lot of juice. and yes, been there, done that, like Joey. Loudspeakers are the way to go, when you have the room for them... and when you have a family that wants to share the music with you !

Ya know, the one thing I've always agreed tube amps are good for is heat generation. Keeps their owners comfy in the winter ;)
