OK, you've probably all seen my signature with varying lyrics in them over time.

I just thought it'd be cool to see a few other posts of lyrics that have meant something to you, or you just think are cool, or really just any reason whatsoever that you can qualify.

We're not looking for the lyrics to a complete song here - but ideally just a verse, or a part of a song that has "really struck it with you".

Mandatory details are artist, song and a reference to where quoted lyric can be heard - CD, LP, SACD whatever.

So, after all the posts I have done with quotes, I am NOT going to start. But I may well join in later...:)

I'll play!

Once upon a time at home
I sat beside the telephone
Waiting for someone to pull me through
When at last it didn't ring I knew it wasn't you

Billy Bragg's A New England, as sung by the late Kirsty MacColl. They don't mean anything special to me, but I think they're kinda neat. I used to think the last line was "When the ******* didn't ring I knew it wasn't you" until I heard the song on a better system!

"To seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night"

which is the last line of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Poem on the Underground Wall". I always thought it was really cool. Available on LP or CD.

Tangled Up in Blue by Dylan

Just about every line in this song. There are some versions on youtube that change the lyrics a bit, but I think these are the original ones from Blood on the Tracks.

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin',
I was layin' in bed
Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red.
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough.
And I was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through,
Tangled up in blue.
She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best.
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue,"
Tangled up in blue.
I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell.
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
Right outside of Delacroix.
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.
She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue.
She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
Tangled up in blue.
I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs,
There was music in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside.
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn,
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,
Tangled up in blue.
So now I'm goin' back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now.
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives.
Don't know how it all got started,
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.
But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
Tangled up in blue.

"With steam and rhythm in the backseat of the car and adolescent perspective projecting life's forecast to the stars, you heard love from the lips, you were rapt by the hips, and the promise was eternal but you couldn't see that far."

Drunk Sincerity by Bad Religion... Unfortunately not a song that sounds great on my Logans.

There you go man, keep as cool as you can.
Face piles and piles of trials with smiles.
It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave.

And keep on thinking free.

Moody Blues from 'In the Beginning', sounds great in 5.1 surround and around and around and around.

"Love shows that God has a sense of humor" Joe Jackson

"So now i'm praying for the end of time" Meat Loaf

"The kiss that I liked best, Is the day I kissed that girl goodby" Leon Redbone

"loving you was like loving the dead"

- TYPE O NEGATIVE "bloody kisses"

BTW this LP rocks on a good Logan analog system!

one of my personal favorites

"Through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time
And far from flying high in clear blue skies
I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide.

If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
And if you make it past the shotgun in the hall,
Dial the combination, open the priesthole
And if I'm in I'll tell you what's behind the wall.

There's a kid who had a big hallucination
Making love to girls in magazines.
He wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith.
Could anybody love him
Or is it just a crazy dream?

And if I show you my dark side
Will you still hold me tonight?
And if I open my heart to you
And show you my weak side
What would you do?
Would you sell your story to Rolling Stone?
Would you take the children away
And leave me alone?
And smile in reassurance
As you whisper down the phone?
Would you send me packing?
Or would you take me home?

Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings,
Thought I oughta tear the curtain down.
I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut"

you guys tell me who wrote this one

I like the lyrics of "Torn Between Two Lovers" by Mary MacGregor. They do make logical sense.

No, I'm not colorblind
I know the world is black and white
Try to keep an open mind
But I just can't sleep on this tonight

Stop this train
I wanna get off
And go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can't
But honestly, won't someone stop this train?

Don't know how else to say it
Don't want to see my parents go
One generation's length away
From fighting life out on my own

Stop this train
I wanna get off
And go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can't
But honestly, won't someone stop this train?

So scared of getting older
I'm only good at being young
So I play the numbers game
To find a way to say that life has just begun

Had a talk with my old man
Said "help me understand"
He said "turn sixty-eight
You renegotiate"

"Don't stop this train
Don't for a minute change the place you're in
And don't think I couldn't ever understand
I tried my hand
John, honestly we'll never stop this train"

Once in awhile, when it's good
It'll feel like it should
And they're all still around
And you're still safe and sound
And you don't miss a thing
Till you cry when you're driving away in the dark
Singing

Stop this train
I wanna get off
And go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can
Cause now I see I'll never stop this train

Sorry for the long quote.

"Whats the use of getting sober, when your gonna get drunk again"
Joe Jackson

"Who drank my beer, when I was in the rear" Buster Poindexter

"You flirted with the butcher, you flirted with the baker, now your flirting with the undertaker" Leon Redbone

"How come my dog dont bark when you come around?" Dr. John

"do da do do do da do do da do do da do do da do do da do do da do do da do" The colored girls Lou Reed

It might seem crass at first blush, but if you hear the actual song with the slow bluesy progression it's about as sensual as the act it's describing...

After your orgasm the world is a different place
The world is a different place
After your orgasm when we slide out of bed
We stay slippery, we stay slippery
So the worries in our heads
Slide away, slide away

The world will change its angle so the furniture will slide
Slowly to one side of the room
For gravity is different now and everything must fall
As we rise, surprising

Oh we must slide into each other
And let this air that knows us in
It's harder to breathe out fast
As we are filled
And as the room turns, I will brace you
As you bravely give your all
To the moon-soaked wall and wind

The air inside this room has yours and mine
It's been inside our breathing
When you reached inside my ribcage and put both your hands around my spine
You realigned my feelings

"After your Orgasm"

Great Thread Justin

Here's 2 from Dylan

Go melt back into the night, babe,
Everything inside is made of stone
Theres nothing in here moving
An anyway Im not alone.

Last night I danced with a stranger
But she just reminded me you were the one

The first is from It Ain't Me Babe
The second from Standing in the Doorway

Standing in the Doorway has many great lines.

I've always liked the fact that these two songs show Mr. Dylan on both sides of Love, the Heartbreaker and the Heartbroken.

I lit out from Reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds
Didn't get to sleep last night 'till the morning came around.

Set out runnin' but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills
I spent the night in Utah in a cave up in the hills.

Set out runnin' but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there
He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air.

Set out runnin' but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night,
The first one's named Sweet Anne Marie, and she's my hearts delight.
The second one is prison, babe, the sheriff's on my trail,
And if he catches up with me, I'll spend my life in jail.

Got a wife in Chino, babe, and one in Cherokee
The first one says she's got my child, but it don't look like me.

Set out runnin' but I take my time,
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight

Yeah, awesome thread Justin - great idea! Here's another of my favorites...

I keep going round and round on the same old circuit
A wire travels underground to a vacant lot
Where something I can't see interupts the current
And shrinks the picture down to a tiny dot
And from behind the screen, it can look so perfect
But it's not

So here I'm sitting in my car at the same old stop light
I keep waiting for a change, but I don't know what
So red turns into green turning into yellow
But I'm just frozen here on the same old spot
And all I have to do is just press the pedal
But I'm not

No, I'm not

People are tricky, you can't afford to show
Anything risky, anything they don't know
The moment you try, well, kiss it goodbye

So baby kiss me like a drug, like a respirator
And let me fall into the dream of the astronaut
Where I get lost in space that goes on forever
And you make all the rest just an afterthought
And I believe it's you who could make it better
though it's not
No, it's not
No, it's not

Aimee Mann
"It's Not"

a little weird an eclectic but I love some of the U2 lyrics, especially from One Tree Hill and Zoo Station:

~~~
We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy love
The sun so bright it leaves no shadows
Only scars
Carved into stone
On the face of earth
The moon is up and over One Tree Hill
We see the sun go down in your eyes
You run like a river, on to the sea
You run like a river runs to the sea
And in the world a heart of darkness
A fire zone
Where poets speak their heart
Then bleed for it
Jara sang - his song a weapon
In the hands of one
whose blood still cries
From the ground
It runs like a river runs to the sea
It runs like a river to the sea
I don't believe in painted roses
Or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the merciful
I'll see you again
When the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red
Over One Tree Hill
~~~

I'm ready
I'm ready for the laughing gas
I'm ready
I'm ready for what's next
I'm ready to duck
I'm ready to dive
I'm ready to say
I'm glad to be alive
I'm ready
I'm ready for the push

In the cool of the night
In the warmth of the breeze
I'll be crawling around
On my hands and knees

She's Just down the line...Zoo Station
Got to make it on time...Zoo Station

I'm ready
I'm ready for the gridlock
I'm ready
To take it to the street
I'm ready for the shuffle
Ready for the deal
Ready to let go of the steering wheel
I'm ready
Ready for the crush
