Ah yes, Todd Rundgren... an underappreciated giant IMHO.

One of my close friends in high school turned me on to Todd Rundgren. We were looking for "trippy" songs to listen to and he played "Dog bark giggle"? Just caught the HD net special of him playing his old and new stuff! He's a great songwriter.

Hot tamales they're red hot, baby got em for sale
Hot tamales they're red hot, baby got em for sale
I got a gal, tree top tall, sleeps in the kitchen with her feets in the hall
Hot tamales they're red hot, baby got em for sale

"They're Red Hot" Robert Johnson

My baby called me up
She said, Why don't you ever take me out?
Pick me up in your brand new car
Shake the short change from your old fruit jar
I put on my dancing shoes
And headed straight for the rhythm and blues
The music was hot
But my baby was not
I got a rocket in my pocket

"Rocket In My Pocket" Lowell George
I know... But I just picked up a bunch of great Little Feat vinyl.

Satch

In a very serious concert hall, at a very serious performance, with a full symphony orchestra behind her, a 250-lb mezzo-soprano started singing, with the full power of her weight behind her:

"We are not alone"

I had never before heard such laughter in that hall.

what on youtube??? that does not count my friend. go get the entire lp for yourself I know the kind of music you like I think you would like it.

No actually it was via Napster. When I get the time I'll give the whole thing a listen.

Universal Mind by The Doors. For me, this song really captures the flavour of "hippiedom". Best heard on "Absolutely Live" double vinyl.

I was doing time
In the universal mind,
I was feeling fine.
I was turning keys,
I was setting people free,
I was doing alright.

Then you came along,
With a suitcase and a song,
Turned my head around.
Now I'm so alone,
Just looking for a home
In every place I see.

I'm the freedom man,
I'm the freedom man,
I'm the freedom man,
That's how lucky I am.

Always liked Matt Johnson's Lyrics

She was lying on her back
with her lips parted.
Squealing like a stuffed pig
I was going through the motions
faking the emotions,
and wriggling around like lizard in a tin.

You've moved further from my side, year by year,
While still making love dutifully sincere

Before our juices run cold and our flesh grows old
Let me feed upon your breast and draw closer to your soul
Let me stay with you tonight and I'll offer you my world
I'll take you to the angels if you'll take me to myself

All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind,
Another year older & what have I done
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt, blinded by science
I've been waiting for tomorrow - all of my life.

This album, for me, is absolutely, utterly, and completely immortal. It is an absolute mega classic. Every bar, every chord, is deeply ingrained with my soul. I don't need to play it - I am part of it. It lives within me.

The memories of seeing them live at both the Electric Ballroom and the Hammersmith Palais have never been bettered by any other band. The choice of lyric is irrelevant for this album, for they are all excellent.

Of what do I speak? The Clash's first album, UK version of course. Lyrics whipped from a website for an easy life.

Deny - Strummer/Jones

Deny, you’re such a liar
You won’t know the truth if it bit you in the eye
Deny, you’re such a liar
You’re selling you no-no all the time

An’ you said we were going out to the 100 Club
Then you said “it ain’t my scene” then you turned up alone
Then you turned up alone

Deny, you’re such a liar
You won’t know the truth if it bit you in the street
Deny, you’re such a liar
You’re selling you no-no all the time

Then said you’d given it up
Gone an’ kicked it in the head
You said you ain’t had none for weeks
Baby I seen your arms
Baby I seen your arms

Deny, you’re such a liar
You won’t know the truth if it bit you in the eye
Deny, you’re such a liar
You’re selling you no-no all the time

Do you think I’m a raving idiot?
Just got off the boat
Step in live, sign this form
Baby ain’t got hope
You ain’t got a hope

[Backing vocal of ‘Whadda Liar’ [What A Liar] begins one line above ‘Deny’ and carries throughout the end speak-sing rant, fading out with the song]
Deny
You’re such a liar
Deny
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
Let’s here it for truth, you know like in the 12p comic
A jailbird's free, with ice cream
A boy meets girl, everybody gets run over
Everybody cry, but I don’t know why
I’m a fool, I can’t be cool, I read a-one to many books
I believe everything I read, when it's written in the slush-filled paper
Deny
You’re such a liar

My friends look at her funny
She laughs and says, why honey
All I ever gave him was a smile
But my Rosanna's going wild... Johnny Cash

Could be holding you tonight
Could quit doing wrong, start doing right
You don't care about what I think
Think I'll just stay here and drink... Merle Haggard

I'm gonna tell you about my baby
I speak of her with pride
She go all the way to make me satisfied
Oh she's my baby, she's my baby, don't you see
I can't call her sugar 'cause sugar never was so sweet... Muddy Waters

God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"...Bob Dylan

Oh, I'm gonna lay, lay my head
On some old railroad iron
Let that 219 train
Ease my worried mind... Bill Broonzy

She was gettin bombed,
And I was gettin blown away,
And she took it in her hand,
And this is what she had to say:
A pearl necklace.
She wanna pearl necklace.

I got a girl, she lives on the hill.
She won't do it but her sister will,
She likes to boogie,
She do the tube snake boogie.

I've been walkin 40 miles of bad road
If the Bible is right the world will explode
I've been tryin to get as far away from myself
As I can

(Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night - Tom Waits
(The Heart Of Saturday Night studio version, 1974)

Well, you gassed her up, behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one in your Oldsmobile
Barrelin' down the boulevard
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night

And you got paid on Friday, your pockets are jinglin'
Then you see the lights and you get all tinglin'
Cause you're cruisin' with a six
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night

Then you comb your hair, you shave your face
Tryin' to wipe out every trace
Of all the other days in the week
You know that this'll be the Saturday you're reachin' your peak

Stoppin' on the red, you're goin' on the green
Cause tonight'll be like nothin' you've ever seen
And you're barrelin' down the boulevard
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night

Tell me, is it the crack of the poolballs, neon buzzin'
Telephone's ringin', it's your second cousin
Is it the barmaid that's smilin' from the corner of her eye
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye

Makes it kind of quiver down in the core
Cause you're dreamin' of them Saturdays that came before
And now you're stumblin'
You're stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night

You gassed her up and you're behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one in your Oldsmobile
Barrelin' down the boulevard
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night

Is it the crack of the poolballs, neon buzzin'
Telephone's ringin', it's your second cousin
And the barmaid is smilin' from the corner of her eye
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye

Makes it kind of special down in the core
And you're dreamin' of them Saturdays that came before
It's found you stumblin'
Stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night

And you're stumblin'
Stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night

XTC- King For A Day- When ever I see a brown noser at work these lyrics come rushing to my mind.

Everyones creeping up to the money god,
Putting tongues where they didnt ought to be.
On stepping stones
of human hearts and souls,
Into the land of nothing for free.

Well the way that were living,
Is all take and no giving,
Theres nothing to believe in,
The loudest mouth will hail the new found way,
To be king for a day.

Everyones licking up to the new king pin,
Trying to get way up with a smile.
Sing for your supper boy and jump to a finger click,
Aint my way of living in style.

cause the ladder gets longer,
And ambition gets stronger,
I cant satisfy the hunger
,
That bad old moon has got you in its sway,
To be king for a day.

Youre only here once so you got to get it right.
(no time to fuss and fight.)
cause life dont mean much if measured out with someone elses plight.
(in time youll see the light.)

cause the way that were living,
Is all take and no giving,
Theres nothing to believe in,
The loudest mouth will hail the new found way,
To be king for a day.

Steve The Heart of Saturday Night is an awesome record . One of my faves. D.R.

If I have a favourite song it would be Nick Cave: The Mercy Seat.

It began when they come took me from my home
And put me in Dead Row,
Of which I am nearly wholly innocent, you know.
And I'll say it again
I..am..not..afraid..to..die.
I began to warm and chill
To objects and their fields,
A ragged cup, a twisted mop
The face of Jesus in my soup
Those sinister dinner meals
The meal trolley's wicked wheels
A hooked bone rising from my food
All things either good or ungood.
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
A tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.
Interpret signs and catalogue
A blackened tooth, a scarlet fog.
The walls are bad. Black. Bottom kind.
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath gathering at my hind
I hear stories from the chamber
How Christ was born into a manger
And like some ragged stranger
Died upon the cross
And might I say it seems so fitting in its way
He was a carpenter by trade
Or at least that's what I'm told
Like my good hand I
tatooed E.V.I.L. across it's brother's fist
That filthy five! They did nothing to challenge or resist.
In Heaven His throne is made of gold
The ark of his Testament is stowed
A throne from which I'm told
All history does unfold.
Down here it's made of wood and wire
And my body is on fire
And God is never far away.
Into the mercy seat I climb
My head is shaved, my head is wired
And like a moth that tries
To enter the bright eye
I go shuffling out of life
Just to hide in death awhile
And anyway I never lied.
My kill-hand is called E.V.I.L.
Wears a wedding band that's G.O.O.D.
`Tis a long-suffering shackle
Collaring all that rebel blood.
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.
And the mercy seat is burning
And I think my head is glowing
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this weighing up of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die.
And the mercy seat is glowing
And I think my head is smoking
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this looks of disbelief.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And anyway there was no proof
Nor a motive why.
And the mercy seat is smoking
And I think my head is melting
And in a way I'm helping
To be done with all this twisted of the truth.
A lie for a lie
And a truth for a truth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die.
And the mercy seat is melting
And I think my blood is boiling
And in a way I'm spoiling
All the fun with all this truth and consequence.
An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
A life for a life
And a truth for a truth
And anyway there was no proof
But I'm not afraid to tell a lie.
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And anyway I told the truth
But I'm afraid I told a lie.

A few years ago I saw a the original typed draft of the lyrics with annotations at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

"Under the iron bridge we kissed - and although I ended up with sore lips - it just wasn't like - the old days anymore. No - it wasn't like those days - am I still ill?" (followed by "Oh yes, oh no!" on some live versions).

"I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour, and heaven knows I'm miserable now. I was looking for a job, and then I found a job. And heaven knows I'm miserable now."

"And if you must go to work tomorrow - well, if I were you I wouldn't bother. For there are brighter sides to life, and I should know because I've seen them, but not very often!"

"As merry as the days were long - I am right and you are wrong. Back at the old grey school, I would win and you would lose. But you've got everything now - yes, you've got everything now - and what a terrible mess I've made of my life. What a mess I've made of my life!".

Mozzer - when he was good.

"Shame on us - doomed from the start - may god have mercy on our dirty little hearts. Shame on us - for all we have done - and all we ever were - just zeros and ones."

Zero-sum.
