there is always time for room treatments go spires if you can and get a up to date legend.

I am thinking that is what I am going to do. Spires, Matinee and Clarity's.

I was planning on doing room treatments anyway, but they ain't gonna cost me anywhere near $2-3000. GIK is one of our sponsors at Home Theater Shack and I will buy my treatments, the ones I don't do myself, from them. Their prices are spectacular and they make good products as well.

I am pumped...

I hope to welcome you to the spire club ASAP! by the way the spires smoke the request in my opinion especially in the lower registers

The deal has been made. Spires, Matinee and Clarity 5.1 setup... should have delivery of everything within a week or so.

Now I just got to get busy and get the HT room done.

I'd go for the reQuest, repanel it. Then down the road, update the woofer, and for less than $3K, have one heck of a system.

I'm still a big fan of the Gen1 designs and height.

The newer models are great, don’t get me wrong, but on the value for $, the Gen1's are hard to beat.

+1 Great advice!

No doubt I have the room... 18' x 23'.

I ain't worried about bass... home theater room with plenty of DIY subs that shake the house down as it is...

These will be crossed over at 80Hz.

The biggest thing I want is that big huge soundstage with depth. I had that with my Ascent i's and it was amazing. I have GOT to have that, otherwise I will be very unhappy.

I would think twice about cutting them of at 80hz

Right choice on Spires! Don't paint them black please!!

I think we have finally reached the point where the "old school" owners and "new school" owners have reached some difference of opinions.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't mean this in negative way. Some of us have Request or earlier ML speakers and we have come to love them and forgive their weaknesses. Now we are getting more people with the newest speakers and they are beginning to assert their superiority (in a professional and good way). I have been a member (of this forum) for a short time and I have seen praise for Odesseys and its big brother, but it seems that this new generation of speakers has created a level of enthusiasm that the Prodigy didn't.

I hope that this will allow us to discuss the various speakers in non-theological terms and that we will learn more about the new generation (to include the Summit X) and discuss the pros and cons in depth as we have about the CLS and other older speakers. If I decide to finally buy an X generation speaker, I would like to have the same background knowledge that I have about the CLS and other older speakers. I would like to know about the reliability of the electronics and other issues that we don't know about today. Reviews can't give us this, but you owners of the newer speakers are learning and I hope that you will post your findings.

Why?

That's a perfectly reasonable crossover for a 10" driver. Depending on slope, they will still be pumping out sound at 40Hz, just not as loudly as at a lower x-over frequency.

That means cleaner mid-bass, which is one of the Spires strong suits.

Sound like Sonnie has got the Bass covered :music:

I think it will take away from them as they are designed to provide usable bass down to 29hz I think the room accustics will have the final say on this one. I would just experiment first before locking my system in

I will no doubt be measuring the response via REW frequency sweeps. It will all depend on what the response curve looks like as to what exact crossover I will use, but generally I try to stick with 80Hz. I would not be against lowering that to 60Hz if it will help smooth out my low end response.

Red is my last equalized response in my room with the subs and Ascent i's (x-over 80Hz). It was nothing short of awesome. I am not sure you can help that too much.

The problem with running the fronts full range is that it can sometimes create standing waves in the main listening position. Then again, if the fronts can handle it and you have a weak area below 80Hz, it might be that the fronts can supplement that weak area.

I am well aware of these nasty standing waves try to place yourself within the golden triangle
