I am a long time Prius owner. The Prius is fantastic, but this Aptera is it. Check-out the web site. 200-300 MPG!!!!! Tech like this could change everything. Just what this country needs. Not more GIANT SUVs. Keep it coming guys.

Spring Pond.....My nice weather passion.

Has been a rough winter but all is coming to life now. Still a ways to go, but the crew is very healthy, without a single loss of life following this long winter.

The crew is hungry. The water temp is above 55 degrees so we can start to feed.

Doug,

Beautiful backyard, only thing missing is a pair of Logans.

This may be a stupid question, but both the wife and I were wondering.
Do the Koi stay outside all year long, or do you bring them inside for the Chicago winter??

Cold weather koi

Doug,

Koi are able to withstand very cold water temps. They don't like cold water apparently, but put-up with it. As long as you keep a hole in the ice for the exchange of gases they will be fine. I keep this hole open using a giant sort of air stone. (moving water will not freeze)

Also water depth plays a role. The water should be deep enough so that ice would not actually touch the koi as they rest and "hibernate" on the bottom. Our pond is at its most shallow 3 feet and at the deepest 12 feet. Many people keep koi outdoors for the winter at a depth of only 2 1/2 feet. Needless to say if our pond froze to a depth of 12 feet we would all have bigger problems than my koi dying off.

Here is another pic of a smaller pond that we essentially use as a filter pond for the large pond.
Sure wish the logans would work outside.
