I am planning to purchase the Pioneer Elite 94TXH this weekend with a new set of ML speakers. The questin is Purity or Source? I listened to them both at BB with different power supplies. Both sounded awesome! Any input is much appreciated.

Keeping what you said constant, let there be no doubt about it: Purity is the way to go.

There are only a couple of differences between the Source and Purity. First, the Source has one paper cone woofer, whereas the Purity has two aluminum cone woofers. Second, the Purity has a 200w amp built into each speaker.

This means if you have a good amplifier powering them, the Purity will be only slightly better. However, the Purity powered with its internal amplifier will be much better than a Source powered by a receiver.

If you have no plans of external amplification, then the purity hands down. Use the receiver's pre-outs to the amplifier inside of the purity and you will be pretty happy.

If you are also thinking of picking up a solid 2-channel or more amplifier, and like the idea of switching around equipment, then it would make more sense to pick up the Source. Look at the source with about $800 - 1K extra in your pocket to shop around for some quality amplification.

I went the way of the Source and used the extra money to bag a Rotel 1080 (about $600 to $800 used). It was fun and I later sold that to purchase the Sunfire amplifier that I still currently own. I liked the idea of being able to swap out amps to fit my taste in music, room, and speaker load needs.

Bottom line: Purity with a receiver / Source if you want to swap out different amps and keep moving up the line (granted you can do that with the Purity, but more expensive).

Have fun!

I have a VSX-92 with the Purities using the pre-amp outs and am very impressed with the way they sound. For the price there isn't much out there that can compete. The built in amps (ICE) are also quite good and are used in many top of the range products including the new Elites.

Does anyone know if the amps are the same as the ones in the Spire and Summit? I've heard that they are, but don't have confirmation.

I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me, but even if it is, that doesn't mean much. In the Purity, the internal amp powers the whole speaker, and in the Spire it only powers the woofer.

I have the Source's and had them hooked up to a Yamaha RX-V663 receiver... They sounded awesome but I felt like they could really benefit from some good clean power. I recently purchase an Emotiva XPA-3 (3 x 200w) amp and all I can say is... WOW!

Just my opinion but... I don't think integrated receivers will give you the fidelity of dedicated amplifiers and processors.

By the end of this year my Yamaha receiver is history and will be replaced with separates.

Ordred Purities and brought home a new Elite SC-05 last night. All this technology is blowing me away. Current system is a Carver Magnetic Field Amp and 2 Bose 901's.

Yes. As funds become available I plan to surround myself in ML just had to get a good start.
