So, I've got this box of at least 50 78s .... You know, the kind that break if you drop them? Bing Crosby, Andrews Sisters.... things like that.... They were my great grandfather's.... Does anyone know where I could find the value of these anywhere online? I figure I would ask here first since I know we have vinyl afficianados in the group.... thx... tim.

Hmm, those shellac discs are pretty fragile, aren't they? :)

There is (or was) a magazine in the UK called Record Collector. I imagine something like that would be the best place to get a proper valuation. You'd need somewhere that specialises in this sort of thing, I would think. The usual antique shops probably wouldn't have a clue!

friend of mine had a similar find when her mom died. except for a few niche collectors she found that the market for 78s was pretty dead. i hope that you find different.

one thing she did get told however was to store them flat not on edge as they can sag over time.

do you have any way of capturing them? an old garrard with an adjustable "78" speed and mono needle, into an old pre-amp (say an Eico) with the various equalizations (decca, london &c) and then into a digital medium (or a reel2reel if you are me :) would be a great thing to do.

or just get an ION turntable with the software to "fix" the 78s after you spin them at 33. NOT!

My neighbor collects and restores Victrolas and I'm guessing he has 10-20 thousand 78's. If you could provide me with a list, I can ask him for an opinion. If you'd prefer, I can give him the description in your post and get a rough idea.

I'll go take a look at them and get back... They are way beyond my years - so I don't really know.... They have been sitting there for 30 years (which is when my great grandfather died).... I just didn't really know if they were worth that much....

That's funny Justin, I was going to suggest that another way to do it on the VPI would be to change the pulley. Either that, or if you have an SDS, and the range on the SDS is great enough - you might be able to move the belt to the 45 RPM position and just play with the speed on the SDS. Not sure if it would have enough additional speed to get all the way to 78 though.

A call to VPI would likely answer the question.
