Hi Tim congrats, and welcome to 2009.

Now if you seriously are into Vinyl and analogue, you will do the following:

Take some of your existing rips, and reprocess them using the following effect chain:

Source CD rip Audio - > Compressor -> EQ (RIAA curves) -> mix with ‘surface’ noise -> Cross mix to simulate LP crosstalk -> Anatres Tube effect -> output file

Voila, a new track with all the EQ artifacts, THD of tube and Vinyl compression, but with the modern convenience of the Sonos UI ;)

Ain’t digital stuff grand

Nope - because that will just sound like a bucket of sh1te! But isn't that what you were hinting at anyway?:D

hahaha - too funny!

Missing one step - need reverse RIAA too.

I have always thought that it was really unfortunate, considering the resolving power of JonFo's sytem, that he does not have a vinyl rig too.

I think it's funny - the nature of Adam's, Bernard's and Jon's comments... one "side" always feels sorry for the other...:)

The fact is both sources are freakin' A+ at their best - only a lot of people without good quality TTs just don't realise or accept the possibility that records can be as good as they are.

I couldn't agree more Justin. I still need to do a lot of comparison and analysis to form a concrete opinion, and I'm working on that a bit. I actually agree with what Jeff says above, it is all good, very good in fact. The Sonos setup run through my Dodson DAC continues to sound better (burn-in?), and I'm pleased about that. Last night I did the compulsive audiophile thing for a bit and listened to several of the same tracks on Vinyl, CD or SACD and streamed through the Sonos. It was both fun and a little maddening.

This morning I'm listening to music, just because I want to bask in the glory of the message, not the medium. Eventually I may become a bit more platform agnostic. This morning however I am very deeply involved in my music via the Grado/VPI/Aesthetix stream.

Because everything that is newer is better:(

No

We all have our own bias on what we think sounds better.
And the debate will go on for who knows how long.

The fact is that digital has continued to get better and better.
I've got some HD rips from Music Giants that are simply amazing.

One thing that is not debatable is the ease of use and convienece of digital.
Maybe I'm just lazy, but having access to your entire music collection without having to leave the couch, to me is priceless.

To Adam's comment about changing the way he listens to music, I find the same thing, some good, some bad.

I find I really have to be in the right frame of mind and disciplined to sit through an entire album,(especially when listening to something new, to easy to skip over a track that might not grab you right away), where the ritual of putting on an LP almost dictates you'll listen to at least one side all the way through.

But on the plus side, with the server, I can create playlists of my favorites, or favorites of an artist to pull up anytime I want and I can also burn these playlists to a disc to listen to in the car, or create a disc for friends.

Also many times I just put the player in random mode and can be pleasently surprised when an old tune pops up I may have not heard in many years and old memories or feelings come rushing in.

I for one will never go back, digital works for me.
To each his own, as Jeff has said "It's All Good"

Just to be clear folks, it’s not that I’m anti-analogue or TT’s, (my jest was tongue in-cheek) it’s just I’m personally not interested in adding a TT to my rig. Been there done that for decades, found something better.

I do have regular access to a good friend’s top-notch analog system:

He has and AR tube preamp a big AR amp powering Vandersteen 4’s along with a Velodyne sub
A $7K TT setup that has multiple parts all on a custom marble stand

All that housed in a custom designed room with acoustic treatments.

His recording studio is in the adjoining rooms and mixing music is his day job, so it’s all pretty well dialed in.

I always enjoy listening to whatever vinyl he wishes to spin, as it does sound great on his rig.

But we switch to an SACD, and I prefer that. ;)

Perhaps my 3 favorite features of this media - playlists (it's great fun to pull together songs in a creative fashion that has some creative "flow"), random (I really like those moments when you are presented with an old favorite you had forgotten about, or that hidden track you never paid much attention to), and the fact that I can stream it where I want. Friday night the wife and I sat out on the deck with some adult beverages listening to a "Mellow Deck Music" playlist that I had created. We heard a wonderful Chet Baker track that we really enjoyed, so then I grabbed the remote, called up the album and listened to the rest of it, then went right back to the playlist without skipping a beat. The convenience alone was worth the price of admission for me.

Still listening to vinyl this morning though...

It certainly has gotten better and better. The HD I have heard is as good or better than the average LP though the best of LPs on the best TT may still be better. CD quality still doesn't get close IMO.

I agree, digital is easy, sort of set it and forget it. For me, part of the fun is in searching the collection, be it CD or LP to find just the right disc.

Indeed it does require you to listen through. For me, especially with non-popular music I always listen to the entire piece, which is why I leave operas for when the wife and kids are not home:ROFL:

That is what my I-Pod and I-Tunes (Lossless) is for. I need to get the Wadia dock!

Robert,

when reading your post this sentence hit me 'dead center', I couldn't agree more. To this 'ole fart there is a certian "fondle factor" that I just plain enjoy.

Wayne,

I totally see your point of view as well, with young ones in the house interuptions, distractions (all good things though, yeah I miss my boys !) make the convienence thing worthwhile, escpecially now with quality sound !

Tim,

You're getting me nervous......... I think 'Darth Vader' is wooing you to the 'dark side' !!

You don't need to worry Dave, I'm not giving up any of my vinyl, nor will I stop buying it. You must have missed this from one of my previous posts...

I spent some more time last night doing some comparative listening and while I love the convenience of the Sonos, it still doesn't measure up to either my Esoteric or the analog rig. In fact I'd say it's got a pretty long way to go in order to measure up to the analog rig on premium LP's. I'm planning to do a full review as soon as I have some time and a few more hours of seat time.

I gotta agree with WB, I love the convenience factor!

Having a fully loaded server has really helped with the clutter durning the initial part of the evaluation process. now I only have big piles of LP's and CD's piled everywhere for a week instead of a month!

That being said, I'm rocking out with the Sooloos while setting up a new turntable....
