The Sooloos certainly looks like it has a slick user interface. Not experienced it though!

On the other hand Tim regarding backup, the USB HDD is a suitable measure, if not as slick as ElephantDrive. Just don't rely on the NAS as there are too many things that can go wrong with RAID. It is high availability, not backup!

For looks, I'll take the SooLoos... I think Jeff hinted he had one of those. I've got no idea whether it's any good or not. Perhaps he'll chime in... perhaps not.

No audio wood yet Justin, but I'm not flacid about it either. We'll see where it takes me.

I like the Sooloos stuff, saw it at CEDIA a few years ago and again at RMAF. What I didn't like was the price - literally 16X what I paid for the Sonos gear. They just got aquired by Meridian, so it will be interesting to see how they continue to evolve.

The Sonos filled the bill for me because it seemed like the best combination of using the music library I already have, the ability to expand easily if I choose to do so, the user interface and the initial cost. I paid just a bit over $1K for the controller and 2 Zone box's.

Seriously, I'm more enthused about the convenience of it thus far. It's got to get a lot better to compete with my vinyl rig.

Darn, I just read in the latest TAS that my recently-acquired PrimaLuna CDP is soon to be released in a Mk II version, with no more 12AX7s. Guess I should be screaming I've been gypped (a la Summit X), but them's the breaks.

Sorry - here goes - "The sound is damn good too", but I thought that went without saying. In fact, my SB3 driving my DAC sounds identical (for all intents and purposes) to my Marantz 8300 driving the same DAC. As for viny, sorry, but I don't consider myself authorised to comment - my Dual 505 sounds like rubbish, a fact with which I'm sure even you would agree?

Definitely no point - I have less than 100 LPs - probably about 80, and most I have digitally too. A few are quite noisy.

The ones I don't have digitally I wouldn't consider "must haves" anyway.

I got the Dodson issue sorted out and was able to spend some time listening to the whole setup last night for a few hours. I'm pleased that it sounds as good as it does, and through the Dodson it actually approaches the sound of my Esoteric. Bear in mind that this is a pretty darn good DAC that when new retailed for $6.5K. Still though, it isn't quite as homogenious as the Esoteric, nor is the soundstage quite as deep, and oddly, the bass doesn't seem quite as deep.

Compared to my vinyl rig there is still a LOT of ground to make up. The vinyl sounds better on all counts unless the LP itself has some sort of damage.

As I said earlier, I'm VERY satisfied with the convenience of the product, but for critical listening I'll still be listening to my other sources.

You can't beat a well set-up table.....................if you have good........quiet vinyl. It has a "thing" that digital just doesn't quite achieve..........yet.

Enjoy your Sonos, when you don't feel like screwing around with analog and enjoy your vinyl when you feel in the mood!

You really don't have to choose...

And if you get an Echo card for your laptop, and a copy of Adobe Soundbooth, you can get some great needle drops for your server, so if you have vinyl you don't want to wear out, you can still enjoy it on your server.

Hi Tim congrats, and welcome to 2009.

Now if you seriously are into Vinyl and analogue, you will do the following:

Take some of your existing rips, and reprocess them using the following effect chain:

Source CD rip Audio - > Compressor -> EQ (RIAA curves) -> mix with ‘surface’ noise -> Cross mix to simulate LP crosstalk -> Antares Tube effect -> output file

Voila, a new track with all the EQ artifacts, THD of tube and Vinyl compression, but with the modern convenience of the Sonos UI

Ain’t digital stuff grand :devil:
