I'm lucky to be living near Austin, TX as it has some great record stores. I've noticed that even Waterloo Records has greatly expanded its already good record area, especially the new (current) records area. They seem to get many of the quality albums, too such as many of the re-releases and Japanese and European imports, too. I haven't seen any of the 45rpm Blue Note albums, but have seen the MoFi releases, Analogue Production, Blue Note, Warner, Capitol, etc. They carry records from just about every genre. The size of the new album area has doubled within the last year to about an area of 120 - 200 sq. ft. That estimate is for the albums in the bins only, not the floor space.
Blues albums, as well as local artists/Texas artists albums are especially well represented at Antone's Records, also located on Austin's drag, Guadalupe St.
I know of at least six other independent records stores in Austin which sell new and used albums. Of course, we also have the chain stores, which now carry some albums (Hastings, Best Buy, etc.) We even have Piranha Records about three miles from my house, in Round Rock. They're mostly heavy metal, but also carry new Jazz and popular albums.
So, what is the record buying experience where you live? Are there many good stores, or do you rely on the internet stores? If you have any great record stores, please name them so that I/We can visit when in your area.
