I have a pioneer elite sc-05 as a main reciever which I use to power my system. I also have a pioneer 1018 avr as well. I was wondering how I could use the 1018 receiver as an additonal amp to power the speakers. My SC-05 has RCA multi-channel in inputs for each speaker as well as RCA pre outs for each speaker, its the same on the pioneer 1018 receiver as well. I was just wondering how I could use and how to connect the other receiver to power my ML center and other speakers. Thanks!

I don't think it can be done. I have not seen a receiver that can bypass the internal pre-amp and be used as a straight power amp. They only allow the reverse, that is bypassing the internal power amp to hook up an external power amp. Only some high end integrated amps allow for what you are asking (and some 2-channel pre amps allow for a home theater bypass). Going further into the topic I can't understand why you would want to go through with this action. The power supplied by the SC-05's class D ice power amp is far cleaner and more stable at low ohm loads than the shoddy components that make up the 1018 (a unit built more for satellites or inexpensive bookshelfs than power hungry Logans). Stick with the SC-05 or buy a power amp.

If it has "main input" terminals, you can connect the pre-outs from the other receiver. But you'll need to beware of different output levels and ensure they are matched. Probably just better to simply buy a better power amp if this is the upgrade you most need.

You should be OK if you can bypass the preamp stage in the additional (1018)amp. I am concerned that connecting inputs of a receiver into the outputs of another receiver may cause problems, not only with balance but by overloading circuits.

As an example, I recently pirated the amp of an older Yamaha 5.1 receiver to drive side speakers. This is possible because the Y has inputs for an external device, and a setting on the preamp stage that allows for a bypass of the preamp. Without something similar, I would be very cautious.

BTW, I saw a nice Niles amp on the 'gon for less than $100. I think it was the SI-250 or SL-285, something like that. Its old but they supposed to be well built. i was tempted but the Y is doing fine in this situation. Just thought I'd throw that in.
