Guys,

I know some of you folks are car nuts as well as audio freaks so here is a tip for you...

Ask for a World Class Driving experience for Christmas, B-day, or whatever other occasion you might get gifts for it is a BLAST!

Just did this driving event this past weekend in the Texas Hill Country and it was UNREAL!

20-30 minutes per car, five cars. Drive then ride (usually in the lead/follow boring cars) and have a ball in the process!

I drove the Maserati Granturismo, Audi R8, Lamborghini Gallardo SuperLeggera, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, and the mighty McLaren SLR Mercedes! It is pretty expensive, but add a friend to join you as a passenger and have a GREAT day of car fun! How else are you EVER going to drive any, let alone ALL, those cars in one day!

That is too cool, James. Give us your "reviews" of these cars from your limited test drives. I am especially interested in the Mercedes. Quite a step up from my little SLK.
 
Alright...you guys asked for it!

First off, I have my own handcontrols that are portable. I took them from car to car. I will post a pic where you can see what I am talking about if none of the current pics show them.

Here are my thoughts on the cars:

Ferrari 430 Scuderia - If you are looking for a track car and don't want a GT3RS, THIS IS THE CAR! This thing is unreal. We were not allowed to put it in "race" mode or defeat the traction control and I never even felt the need to do so. In race mode it shifts in 60ms and I am not sure what the shifts are in regular mode but they were WAY faster than any other car I drove! It was telepathic too. It knew where you wanted to go and took you there. VERY, VERY easy to drive quickly! An amazing car to say the least! To spartan and to hot to use everyday, but for a track machine it would be VERY, VERY hard to beat.

Lamborghini Gallardo SuperLeggera - I call this car the Prince of Darkness because of its dark interior and more so its sound. Deeper than all but the SLR and much more brutal than any, other than the SLR. Loved the V10 howl though. I don't know if this one had a brake problem or what, but there was no bite and then FULL BRAKING no matter how fast or slow you were going and those brakes are SUPER POWERFUL! There is no finesse in this car. The shifts were slow and severe and the down shift blips were loud and obvious (vs. the total finesse of the Scud). Probably would have been better in a different shift/traction mode. Considering it is 4wd it has really good steering feel. Not nearly as direct as the telepathic Scud but it was very good. I would say other than the brakes this car might be a touch better than the Scud for street use, but I would need more time with both to be sure.

Audi R8 - This is the closest thing to a 928 in this group. Very, very comfortable, very easy to drive, very forgiving. Not as fast as most of the rest of the group is was quiet and everything was right where it should be and it was just precise. You could easily use this car every day. Now if they would build this car with a Boxster body or a 928 body or an Italian supermodel body or something other than the ugly metal they draped it in I would be in love... BUT, to my eye it was just as ugly in person as it is in pictures. That is totally subjective and I know others just LOVE it, but not me. You can't beat the car for comfort and speed though. It is truly Germanic as you would expect from Audi.

Maserati Granturismo - If I could only have ONE CAR it would be this one! You can seat four adults in this thing. It is plenty fast, makes good sounds, handles VERY WELL and is drop dead GORGEOUS! This is the one car in the group that can do it all! I loved this car! It was the last of the cars that I drove and I fell in love with this thing! Someday I WILL OWN ONE! It was a 928 with real back seats and slightly less sporting nature. If they hold up over the long run this car will be hard to beat for decades. Not to fast, but certainly no slouch and good handling nature without going over the top! As noted if it holds up over the long haul these cars will become real icons and highly sought after!

McLaren Mercedes SLR - The GOD OF THUNDER! This car is WILD! From the moment you enter this car it is trying to KILL YOU! Roland (40 year pro racing veteranand WCD instructor) was shotgun in this car for all the drivers and for good reason! This car WILL KILL YOU! Now, it could be that they got the recent alignment wrong or it just does not like the tires it is on, but this car was ALL OVER THE PLACE! My '92 GTS is the same way but it is on crap tires right now so any pavement irregularities cause the car to be all over. The same was true of the SLR BUT the big difference is the steering on the SLR is WAY to fast! Not to mention with all that HP on tap you can get into trouble in a real hurry. This would be a great supercar to have though as it is really striking looking. In fact I saw the prototype of this car a long time ago at the Indy F1 race and loved it. Then the production version came out and it had to many gills and too long a nose and I didn't like it anymore, but in person this car looks much better! Nothing like it out there. That said, Roland said he would take a Carrera GT over an SLR or an ENZO ANY DAY! He has driven the wheels off ALL of them so he should know! It is one WICKED fast car FOR SURE!

More pics...this time you actually CAN see my handcontrols and how I work them. Though I normally steer left handed and use the controls right handed. I was just getting going in the Maserati so that is why I was using the handcontrols with my left hand in this pic...

The older gentleman is Roland. He is one of the WCD instructors and has been racing Porsche's and Ferrari's for more than 40 years! He is from Belgium. SUPER GUY! He rode passenger seat in the SLR because, frankly, the car was quite dangerous for those with more testosterone than skill! He and I had a BLAST in that car though!

Glad you had a great time. Pretty jealous, to be honest. Fab pics, too, and great descriptions of the cars. I was going to post show pics of all you drove before you drove them, as a matter of fact. But there didn't seem to be too much interest.

Actually, check this little guy out - he's starting young!

Thanks guys it was a GREAT time and if you like exotic fast cars you really should do this at least once! Pretty expensive but man, you will never forget it!

As for the handcontorls they are SUPER EASY! You can see in one of the shots of me in the Maser where I am working on one of them. What I am doing is taking a screw out (one on each side) so that I can slide the jaws to a new width that is closer to fitting the peddles in that car. Two screws slide the jaw in or out put the screws back in...

The jaws are spring loaded so they stay where you put them. There is a collar near the handle that slides up the shaft to compress the spring, widening the jaws so you can take them off the peddles...or put them on...

Once you have a good fit of each handcontrol (one to the brake and one to the gas) the handles will be positioned with the same orientation as the peddle itself. In other words the handle for the gas has a vertical orientation and the brake has a horizontal orientation so you don't have to look down to see what you have hold of.

They sit roughly in your lap. You can see in another picture of me in the Maser where I am actually using them with my left hand. They are really a bit closer to the seat edge than in your lap I guess but they are not so close to the seat edge where they can slip down onto the floorboard.

The more narrow the footwell of a car the more difficult these are to use and deal with. Interestingly of all the cars the narrowest footwell was in the SLR! By far the biggest car of the bunch it had the most claustrophobic cabin! Go figure! As expected from my past experience the Audi (ie. German car) was the best peddle size for my handcontrols and they fit best on that car. The Ferrari did not like them much at all. I never found a good fit on the Maser but I could have changed out to my smaller set of jaws and been best of all in that car I believe.

Sometimes they will come off so you really have to be ready to pick one (normally the brake...which is less than ideal I assure you) up and poke at the brake peddle and get pulled over to reattach, but I only had that problem once and it was not during braking and it was with the Maser. No biggie. They worked fine if not as well as in my 928's in all the rest of the cars and as noted if I had put the smaller jaws on before heading out in the Maser they would have been best in that car.

Oh, and when I am driving I use my right hand to push on either peddle and my left hand to steer. If you are really in a hurry and need to be going FAST you will probably need a hand hitting the "up" paddle in all of these cars because it is on the right side. I think most of them are a simple electrical contact though so if I were to own one I would rig something up that would allow me to use my left hand to go up or down...

Hope that helps a bit... In case it was not clear plain old 3 peddle cars with manual transmissions are way out...not enough hands to do that safely.
 
Back in September 2007 I went to an Italian car show in Michigan with my brother and a Ferrari owning buddy. We were privileged to join a parade of supercars and escort a Vector back to the owners home.

The gentle smell yet searing fumes of racing gas from the Vector fill our lungs, and we were loving it. I felt a little nervous the whole time almost shaking, like I was getting up the nerve to ask a girl out back in High School or about to have *** for the first time.

The head engineer of Vector who now travels the globe servicing these aircraft spec-grade automobiles invited us into his home. We watched promotional videos and went though his scrap book re-living the stories and memories of the thing we now call "Vector".

When you get that close to understanding what went into building such a car, and marvel at the hurdles they leaped over, there is an awe to it. Unless you have been part of something like that, or at least shared a little time with someone who has, perhaps some respect or a nod should be shown.

I really don't see what qualifies the critics to speak out as they do, where is the supercar they helped build?

The Vector is a spaceship compared to anything else on the road, it makes a statement.

I like something with more curves and lighter myself, but have to respect the effort that went into making it.

Not sure to what you are referring in the last half of your post there, but I personally LOVE the VECTOR W8! ALWAYS have! Would LOVE to own one someday, but it seems unlikely since there are only what??? 13 of them out there? That car was/is SUPERBAD! The M12 or whatever they called it after Lambo stole the company from TW was total crap, but the W8's ROCK!

LOVE THE PICS! You had a real treat getting to see one up close and in person and to visit with one of the primary folks involved in making that car a reality!

If you have anymore shots of the Vector I would LOVE for you to pass them on to me! Interior shots ESPECIALLY!

Oops, my bad.

I did a copy & paste from a post I made in another forum (Pelican Parts) a few weeks ago. Some of the boys seem to like to call the Vector and ALL people associated with it bad names. Someone even compared it to Moller the flying car guy. I think a "Tucker" reference might be closer in truth.

I got to see Ken Lingenfelter's private collection a few weeks ago, just a few hundred of the world best cars including many hp American cars from the 1960's and early 1970's.

I have to get around to posting something, I was like a kid in a candy store.

You sir are a lucky guy!!

Yea, you gotta watch some of the boards, plenty of bad mouthing goes on with a few of them!

Be cool and post some pics and info on the other cars you have seen as well as those interior shots of the Vector!
