Hi all,

Just wondering what is the general thought on my situation.
I m getting the voyages for my new house, and want to get a sub to cokmplement them. However, do you reckon it s better to get a sub with eq and do it myself, or get a martin logan sub and get the dealer do the adjustments so that they blend in really nice.
there is a price difference between a eq sub like the jl audio or velodyne and a non eq sub..

I would say get the EQ sub & read up a bit on the topic.
Only you know what you like as Roberto here would say trust your ears.
It will probably be fun....

A pre pro with audyssey xt 32 will eq the sub for you and might make sense if you are putting together an ht with 5.1

Anything a dealer (or you!) can do with an ML sub to blend with the mains they can do with those from other manufacturers, since virtually all quality subs incorporate phase/volume adjustment and low-pass filtering. EQ is a big differentiator between the three manufacturers you've listed and will greatly help you achieve flat, accurate bass.

ML subs provide no EQ. JL's provide only one band. If you can swing one of the Velo DD models, you get their very nice SMS EQ, which has eight bands that can be set automatically or manually. In the US, at least, used Velo DD's are comparable in price to ML Depth/Descent and JL f112/f113.

Far better than the EQ built into any subwoofer, too.

hin guys
thanks to all that answered and given me their advice.I forgot to add that it will be only for my lounge/tv area which is only a a 2ch set up.However, m not against a processor plus power amp if you reckon it will give me a better integration of the speakers and sub.
I am litterally pulling my hair at what to do. So if that s the case can anybody recommend a good precessor that would help me achiueve my goal, keeping in mind that it will be mainly for music.
My goal was to get a cedia member to do all the install, but house cost me a fair bit more than i thought, and now forced to do most of the work myself when it comes down to that install.it does not worry me too much as m an electrician and love doing all those things but just afraid i d be waisting money away by not getting the best of those voyages and a sub.
I did consider the velodyne dd+ range and will try to audition one.
It s so hard to audition custom gear heare in australia, i basically had to buy a pair of second hand passage, installed them in garage and see for myself.None of the dealers have them installed but all say they are nice and not really keen on byuing a pair of voyages without at least an idea of what m in for.If they are better than the passage and think they are, then i will be a happy man.

thanks a lot eveybody and keep those suggestions coming.I trully appreicate them.
sincerely yours
john

John, any pre-pro or integrated which incorporates flexible mains/sub crossovers, distance/delay adjustment and EQ will provide substantial AQ benefits, especially in but not limited to the bass frequencies. Dunno what your budget is, but for 2ch "only", the HK 990 integrated has received good reviews, as has the DEQX HDP Express preamp. Both retail around $2K. There are several other options in the $5-7K range. Your other choice is a good AVR or multi-channel pre-pro. Because they're manufactured in very large quantities, they can be had for a lot less $$$.

View attachment CONCEPT 12 LAYOUT lower floor.zipHi Ken and thanks again for your advice.
I just noticed that you have a tact 2.2 xp.How does it suit your needs in terms of room correction?
so far m leaning towards a integra pro (dhc 80.3) and a 3ch wyred for sound amp for front duties and a lesser 2ch amp for surround.I figured if m going for a integra pro i may as well have a full set up again, even though i already have a dedicated HT room.
what other sub would suit the voyages in your opinion.
also, do i really need 2 subs?please find attached a copy of my floor plan and the room m talking about is named the family room and since it was drawn we increase the overall length to 6.3m instead of 5.9m.it s also not fully enclosed as there in no wall between the family room and the rest, just a 600mm wall to differentiate the areas..
thanks again

John, the TacT is sorta like the ultimate weapon when integrating subs and/or tailoring the FR curve for personal preference. But.....the learning curve is steep, OCONUS support likely problematic, it's 2ch only and these days there are other, equally good options. If I were you and I wanted to go 2ch only, I'd take a close look at the DEQX products. HDP Express is only $2K plus options, HDP-3 $4K ditto. DEQX happens to be an Aussie company, so no worries with sales/service. For a multi-channel setup, the 80.3 is an excellent choice and Audyssey XT32 will correct the bass as well as anything out there. What you won't get vs. TacT/DEQX/Trinnov etc. is the same degree of target curve flexibility (there's other stuff, but it's probably not important in this case).

As for subs, it's a large room and yes, I'd get two. Large-ish, preferably. John, there's no such thing as a sub which suits the Voyage, there are only subs and better subs. Once you have a TacT or DEQX or Integra in the loop to manage Xover/delay/EQ, pretty much the only thing you should ask yourself is "What's the lowest frequency I want to reproduce and at what volume?". All choices devolve from the answer to that question - though WAF may be a perturbing factor.:p
