I was at one of the sites I visit the other day and something caught my eye. I had read over the years that the Carver Amazing Platinum speakers were a nice speaker and reading some of the posts at the Carver Forum convinced me those owners were as rabid as we are!

Well, I bought a pair of these and plan on picking them up next week. The owner has replaced all of the woofers and had the ribbons rebuilt, whatever that means. My wife thought I was nuts. Actually, she asked me if the ribbons were some kind of light!

I know there is at least one person here that has owned the Silvers that were for sale several months back. I say that based on the screen name is identical in both places but I will not reveal that at this time.

I'm not absolutely certain why I bought these but I think I can call it an impulse buy. I'm fairly certain I can pass these on if they are not my cup of tea after trying them for a bit.

So have any of you guys ever heard or owned these speakers and what was/is your opinion?

I'm proud of your Gordon.

You are doing your patriotic duty and stimulating the economy. :D

Good luck and keep us informed.

You may want to PM "DREAMER". I know he was at carverfest with Bob Carver himself and has listened to these speakers.

I have owned several pair of Silvers and have listened top the Platinum. They are decent but need a big amp to get the most out of them. The bass is a softer rolling bass but still good. Doi not expect to move the house with it. The mids and higs are decent but lack the clarity of the ESL or ML. I ran mine with a Clearview (Rudi Blondia) designed external cross over with twin custom made 1259 subs and 4 amps.

Just been doing some research - and noticed there is a pair on ebay US for $200 with 18 hours left....

Gordon - if you haven't got the manual, there's one on ebay too.

Enjoy.

You might be referring to the pair of Silvers I sold a few weeks ago on the Carver site. The "Amazings" are good speakers--really great speakers for the money--but they do not equal ML Summits or Spires, which project a deeper and wider soundstage and offer even more transparency. The Carvers give you a heck of a lot of hifi for the money, however. I sold mine for $375, which was a steal. (They sold within a day to someone who drove here from another state.) Dollar for dollar, they are a tremendous bargain. On the other hand, the big Carver ribbons are power hogs. They have to be driven by a fairly substantial amp to sound their best. I hooked them up to my McIntosh MC-402 to demo them for the buyer, and I noted that the amp had to work substantially harder to drive the Carvers than my Summits.

A lot of people like these speakers, so there is a good market for them if you aren't satisfied. I guess my only complaint is that they are rather large and have a pretty low WAF. My wife always said that they looked like rocket fins. Coming from her, that was not a compliment!

Just to reiterate what everyone else has said, they need STUPID power to get going, I have heard them setup in a good room with a carver tfm 55 on the ribbons and another big sand amp on the woofers, it was Amazing

If my 501's don't have enough grunt to drive these, they will certainly be back up for sale quickly! They actually measured 720w on the 8 ohm tap and 1000 on the 4 with 100 amps of current.

CCH, wish I had seen those earlier. I'm heading up to upper NJ to pick these up and staying local would have been less time consuming. I think it is a pretty safe bet that if I don't care for them I can move them easily for what I paid for them. The Carver folks seem as devoted as we are.

Unfortunately I had to back out of the deal on these. Laura went to the dentist and needs 4 caps. Our part of this is just going to kill the audio budget for a bit.

Why in the hell do we pay for insurance if it does not cover needed procedures? Sorry just a rant!

Hi G,

I have Delta Dental and although they cover the basics (cleaning, six month exam, fillings) they exclude or pay only 50% for the big ticket items such as crowns, caps, or paradontal work.
