not too long ago, I modded a "low-fi" MTX 10" powered sub by lining the cabinet with insulation and plugging the ports. The result, to my ears, was phenominal in sound improvement and control.
I'm thinking about doing the same, at least as an experiment, to the pair of Vantages I have. Has anyone done anything similar, and if so or not, what are your thoughts or experiences with such mods.
I should say the main reason for this idea is that I don't like sloppy and "runaway" bass that ported speakers tend to give off, prefer acoustic suspention speakers, and wonder if the already wonderful Vantages woul profit.

Hola Beakman...I own too the Vantages and the bass response is very good in my room. With all respect, I think that if you do that, you will loose some of the flat bass response that Vantage has. You will make a resonance point. ML chossen open cabinet, because the size of the cabinet and the size of the woofer, to get the flatest freq. response in most rooms. This is why you have a bass control at 35Hz with +-10dBs. The tuned port is for bringing those resonance picks down. The Summits are sealled cabinet. But instead of one 8" woofer, they have 2 10" woofers in separated chambers. Total different design. My 2 cents...happy listening,
Roberto.

You can try it and see how you like it. No harm done if it doesnt work. However your comment about ported bass enclosures being sloppy and having run-away bass is a false stereotype. Many high end speaker manufacturers use ported designs very successfully. Obviously mentioned was the Summit. Wilson Audio, B&W, etc....many others....use ports with no ill effects. If its implemented properly, it works.

But experimentation is always fun and encouraged by me. :) Let us know the results.

Comments noted and well considered :) .I will definitly try and use my sound meter when I do to double check my ears. Had the ports been placed in the front of the cabinet I may feel differently, but the idea of having somthing bouncing off the wall first, like bass, the cat, or even myself, with less than desireable control has me thinking. I'm also sure this is just a symptom of my own room acoustics rather than a compromise of design.
BTW: Oops, I really meant this to go in the "Tweeks" section. My bad.
