Why valves?

1) Because they look cool, when in fact they're hot.

2) Because you can run an amp with valves made in the 1930s and get blown away by the sound. How cool is that?

3) Because generally there's less listener fatigue.

4) Because they keep the house warm in the winter.

5) Because the more esoteric ones sometimes glow different colours.

6) Because they are more dangerous:)

7) Because the sound of rock'n'roll is an overloaded valve. Period.

8) Because my Gibson Les Paul Supreme loves 'em to bits.

9) Because you have more than one amp - you can tailor it to some extent, sometimes to quite a large extent, by valve rolling.

10) Because bidding for ultra cool, super rare valves on ebay is a lot of fun.

11) Because the circuits are generally simple, you can easily spend a fortune on high end components and solder them in, no problem.

12) Because they are more fun.

13) Because they generally look a damn site more entertaining than a solid state box.

14) Because I say so, and because my ego has got the better of me.

15) Because.

16) Because mine are so heavy, I can't easily move them, therefore it's majorly off putting even considering an upgrade!

17) Because you can build huge stock piles of rare tubes during your valve rolling, then realise it's the only part of your hi-fi system that will actually appreciate over time. When I'm 156, I'll be rich!

18) Because when your dead, your niece will wonder what the hell those bizarre boxes with light bulbs in were anyway.

19) Because Ken Kessler likes them.

20) Because of respect respect for the old masters - Kondo, Shindo, Tim De Paravicini and William Z Johnson.

21) Because of dream tubes like the Telefunken RS 237, which you know you'll never own.

22) Because they're the dog's dooberies.

23) Because I'm sure there's at least another 20+ reasons, but I need to go have a bath.

24) Because the better ones seem to selectively amplify the bits you want to hear and make less of an issue of the ones you don't.

25) Because they don't sound as though they are trying too hard. This amplifying music bit - it's easy, they say. Unless the amp is badly underpowered for the speaker, of course.

26) Because they come in all different shapes and sizes.

27) Because they have cool names like Amperex Bugle Boy, Tesla, Mullard etc.

28) Because they are anti government policy due to excessive power consumption, and that's pretty punk.

29) Because power consumption as a rule may well be a complete red herring, and really global warming is just to do with sun activity and not much else.

30) Because when they wear out, you can break the glass to see how they are constructed/what they are made of.

31) Because spotting fake or re-branded valves is quite entertaining,

32) Because silk screening is cool.

33) Because well made ones are a pleasure to own.

34) Because all valve FM tuners made in the early sixties just after the advent of stereo multiplexing sound better than just about any other tuners made ever.

35) Because a lot of the valves used in my tuner are dirt cheap, even NOS ones from the established greats like RCA, GE, Telefunken etc.

36) Because single ended tube amps seem to let the music just flow out with consumate ease.

37) Because they can sound incredibly natural. I was recently blown away by an Audio Research VT110 driving Martin Logan Summit X's.

38) Because of electron luv - the coolest looking amps ever made?

39) Because of romantic sounding amps like the French Jadis JA200 driving the Martin Logan CLX.

40) Because after a while you realise that a lot of the best valve amps run triodes - the simplest valves.

41) Because of truly absurd valve amps like the Tube Research 800 Watters, and the Jadis JA800.

42) Because of Bob Carver's 1 Ohm Apogee Scintilla driving KT88 based creations in bright red.

43) Because you can put 'em in pre-amps, power amps, CD players and all sorts of other places. Pretty versatile, really.

Dammit, there are more reasons still, but at least I kept to my tongue-in-cheek word!

Do you really want another twenty?

1. They sound better!

2. Your friends think your insane!

3. You can change the sound w/o buying a whole new amp!

4. Easily tweaked if that is your thing!

5. They make you be careful, 400v is killer! Literally!

They are the real deal, To me they sound more like real instruments in a real space. Many will differ!

When they give up the ghost, you replace them, rebias, and off you go...in general. You don't have to worry about a bunch of related circuits getting fried (as you do with transistors)....in general :)

Oooh, aahh - you're playing close to the line there Bernard. How many blown valves have taken out a circuit or two!

Adam, I have not had any blown "valves" take out any circuits, ever....but then I am using ARC equipment!

Tubes are not better, they are different than SS.

To my ears;

Tubes capture the middle part of a note, the middle bloom, the fundamental core.

Solid State captures the beginning and ending but misses the middle part of a note.

Maybe hybrids are the answer?

Haha!!! Hilarious....

I love tubes too.... Re: the Les Paul ... my son has the SG 61 Re-issue...with an Engle PowerBall amp.... lots of 'tubilidge' there...

Actually it's ENGL. An old mate of mine used to use one. He bought it, demo'd it in front of the rest of the band, and the conclusion was it absolutely slaughtered the Marshall they had been using.

Good amps, for sure.

User211 has WAAAAAY too much time on his hands.

discuss...

Awww Tom, you know it's because I haven't got any real friends... and it's you I love. I spend all day posting just hoping for a reply from you...

Then when you do, you haven't even got the heart to call me Justin. Boo hoo...

:D

I haven't had any blown transistors.......period.

.......but then I am using a Canadian amplifier!

Yes, he demo'd it against a Krankenstein head (hope I didn't kill that spelling as well)... and it crushed it. He recently got a monster cab (a Madison)... He wants to go to a school in Boston called Berklee - a music school...It is his passion - and of course he helps me dial in the logans.

He'll be interested - was your mate's comparison against Marshall tube or solid state equipment?
