Actually, a variation on Sun afternoon music... took my family to see the Yamato Drummers of Japan today in Clearwater. Wow! What an exhilarating performance... musically, artistically, and athletically! I was physically worn out from just watching, and can only imagine the conditioning and training this troupe endures. I've never heard/seen anything like this, and won't even try to describe their synchronized sonics. Unfortunately, it looks like this was their 2nd to last U.S. concert this year (last one is Wed in Gainesville, FL), then some Canadian and World performances.
Thanks for posting. They are going to be in Ottawa in 2 weeks, and I plan to see them.

Enjoying a blast from the past... Tommy, with the London Symphony Orchestra and Guest Soloists. I once owned this version on vinyl, but that was 20+ years ago! I was just thinking about it, and discovered there is a newly remastered CD version from Repertoire Records, complete with original liner notes and pics. I got a copy off eBay, and it sounds pretty damn good. Probably not quite as dynamic as the original vinyl version, but still very listenable. Looking forward to seeing The Who at the Super Bowl halftime show!

I started off the day finishing listening to something I was really enjoying yesterday - Hayden's "Paris Symphonies" on a mid-70's Phillips pressing with The Academy of St. Marting in the Fields conducted by Neville Marriner. After that I got the blood pumping with Sir Malcom Arnold conducting his own "Overatures" on an awesome sounding Reference Records recording. Joe Henderson's "Page One" came next, this by virture of Acoustic Sounds 45rpm Blue Note re-issue. Then a real departure, but it just caught my eye when I was pulling tunes out of the rack and I haven't listened to it for years - a 1977 Super Disk pressing of Greatful Dead's "Terrapin Station". This sounded so good, and I heard so many other things in this one - George Harrison, Alan Parsons Project, Wilco... I pulled a few more things off the shelf to enjoy later this afternoon after the Bronco's game. It's 18 degrees and snowing here today - I think I'll stay inside and keep the tunes spinning!

I've been on a Scott LaFaro (upright bass player) tear lately. Just got the Bill Evans Trio "Sunday At The Village Vanguard" Vinyl yesterday. I just about wore out the "Waltz for Debby" vinyl copy.

Whew! I thoughtI had heard some pretty good jazz before -- but it pales in comparison to the superb music :music: of the Bill Evans Trio I recently acquired, based primarily on your above recommendation.

Thanks a heap!

Hey Len,

I'm glad you picked up on that! I just love the way Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian really breathe life into the three piece format. I love Miles Davis and Coltrane and all those great horn players, but being a bass player, I think the horns are mixed a little too far forward. But that's just me.

What do you say to a bass player with two black eyes?

Nothing. You done told him twice...

Satch

Got myself 'stirring' early this AM first with 'The 2009 Edinburgh Military Tattoo' (I really want to get my butt over there next year to see it in person) and right now as I type this Alabama's 'Christmas in Dixie' is spinning on the black pizza machine !

I am in the holiday mood as well this morning. Listening to the I-Tunes Christmas Sampler, a FREE album download packed with 20 songs, that's right 20!! There is something for everyone here traditional, country, pop, rock & classical. Get it!

Got in a couple of new CD's this AM. First off was the new Nora Jones release "The Fall" I think this is a excellent disc more bluesy and bass lines than her prior releases, as always Nora's excellent vocals!

Next up was Lady Antebellum a country release. I'm not a big country fan, but this is a great disc, Hillary Scott's vocals are great!

This morning, was listening to an interview with the artists behind Big Big train, a progressive rock group. And downloaded their full-quality, 23 minute-long, title track from their new album. Go get it now, it's like totally free.

If you like early Genesis, this is a must-have.

Pretty cool stuff.

Listening to Barlow Girl's Another Journal Entry. Their acoustic version of "Never Alone" showcases some beautiful harmonies by this christian pop trio. Crystal clear and very moving through the Summits this morning.

its a prog rock kind of day:cool:

Cool stuff.

Do you have the SACD of Brain Salad?

I do, and it's pretty awesome on that format.

I was cleaning out the equipment room today and tripped over the boxes of old LaserDiscs in there. So I've been replaying a few of them.

Rush - Chronicles

Mastering was pretty bad on this disc. No bass, limited dynamics. Even though it had a digital track.

Tangerine Dream - Three Phase

Great video (for LD) and the soundtrack was much better on this one. Akin to a CD of that vintage

Boy, has video and audio production come a long way in the past decade plus.

Again its my Sunday morning given my work schedule.

The female vocals are a refreshing new flavor to what you might know Franks standards to sounded like. The re-arranged "You Didn't Try To Call Me" is a real treat for any Zappa Fan! Bianca really puts on a display of vocal mastering, making all the notes audible the madman genius had written into the songs but few male vocalists can articulate. This release is a quintessential nugget of genuine 70's Zappa not to be missed.
