I would like to get a really fast CD drive for my computer to speed up the process. First, how much does the sound degrade? Second, what is the fastest I can buy? Last, the Summit spikes are coming along.....

Are you talking about speed for ripping? IMHO, quality of the rip takes precedance over speed, which is why I use EAC. All other things being equal, I've heard that Plextor drives are the best from a ripping standpoint.

P.S. Likewise, no need to rush on the spikes... we'll take quality over speed (though in your line of work, speed apparently REIGNS SUPREME). :D

EAC?? Your way over my head now.:( I think the SB sound stinks anyway (we've done this way to many times) so as long as they are on my hard drive that's good with me. No rush on the spikes...just getting it done as I would expect.:D I'm also excited for all you Summit owners that I can help. Just happy!!!

IIRC 52x is the fastest you can read a CD. At that speed you might run into read errors though as I would imagine the transport mechanisms on them aren't the best.

I'd say that slow and easy wins this race ;)

EAC = Exact Audio Copy, http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ the CD ripper software, take rip quality over speed, rip once play many.
Also see EAC Quick Start manual. Use FLAC Free Lossless Audio Codec as the encoder, digital bitstream output from the computer to an external dac or HT receiver and your MLs will love you.

ps. Thanks for the spikes

I've been using AltoMP3 maker for years. An upgrade to the latest version of the LAME MP3 codec is a must.

I rip using a TDK drive that rips at 52x, though I had found 40x the best speed to minimize errors.
