JM, you will absolutely love your new Summits! Just remember that it will take a couple of hundred hours (some say as much as 500) to 'burn in' your speakers.

As for power, my summits are plugged directly into a 20-amp line that is dedicated to my home theater. I'm driving them with a Sunfire TGP-5 pre-amp and a Sunfire TGA-7400 amp, which are plugged into a Richard Gray RGPC 400 line conditioner.

Ken,

Thanks for the follow up. I think my first move should be to get a dedicated line to the system. Then some type of surge/power protection. Seems like "regenerated" power adds a lot of extra expense. I'm wondering if just putting in the dedicated line is enough.

Greetings Joe,

Congrats on going with the Summits. Seems like we had this conversation before but I'm happy that you appear to be comfortable taking the plunge.

Regarding power and such, I have a dedicated 20 amp circuit for my equipment, including the power amp and another dedicated 20 amp circuit for my two Summits.

As far as power conditioners and the like, I would recommend trying the dedicated power outlets first. For whatever reason, all the PLC's that I've tried seem to be subtractive (loss of resolution, inner detail / transient speed, damping the top end, etc.) without a whole lot of benefit to my ears but that's just me. I plug my amp into one AC outlet and the Mapleshade powerstrip into the other. I'm sure there are many out there that find them to be a positive asset to the overall sound of their system. In addition, I live in an area where the power supply is reasonably stable and we are not subject to lightning strikes, at least in the valley.

So my thoughts are to try the dedicated 20 amp power circuit first, get used to the way it sounds until your Summits are fully broken in, and then audition some PLC's.

Contact Fatwyre 800.328.9973 (The Cable Company) and arrange to audition the PLC of your choice. I'd talk with John. Very knowledgeable and a well seasoned audio type.

Gordon,

THANKS!

I am very excited, but will have to wait a couple weeks at least I'm sure. They were just ordered today and I won't have an estimated delivery time for a couple of days. The real bad part is that the one Vantage panels is so bad I can't play ANY music, unless I play one channel! Actually that is kind of interesting.

I have just spent about an hour reviewing Jason's spike thread, and will probably order those, although I'm not sure if I need the 2.5" or 3", or a combination on the two! I hope he still has some left. Although my carpet is medium to low pile, I'm concerned about getting the Summits off the floor enough for the woofer to breath! I remember putting one Vantage on an extra Salamander Synergy shelf with horrible results. Lost the bass and the vibration was messing with my CD player! I sure would like to put something under them besides the carpet, but have yet to find anything here that seems to work. The spikes may be the best solution.

Anyway, if you don't mind, I'd like to give you a call sometime soon to discuss in detail a few thoughts I have about the Summits!

Thanks!!

JM

Don't fall into group think

The cable company is a great way to try out new stuff, but they are a sad example of group think mentality. They will ask you what equipment you have and then recommend what everyone else using that equipment has. For example, with Logans they recommend Tara Labs speaker cables. Is Tara Labs the best choice for cables? Possibly, but probably not. Ideally, you want people independently coming to the conclusion that something is excellent, not because they were steered toward it or because someone else is using it.

So if you use them, try a bunch of stuff that they recommend, but also try stuff you have heard of here and elsewhere. Diversity of independent opinions is the key to success.

I am using 20 amp dedicated power source from the distribution Panel/CB. I have replaced the power socket (dual in one package) and plugs with Oyaide Berelium - Remarkable difference. Previously I was using two separate power line of 20 amp each - one for the Power amp and other for the MIT Zcenter which provides supply to rest of my equipment incl my Summit. It definitely reduced the hum for my Shelter 501. Can any one suggest whether I need to replace my MIT power conditioner?
