Just took delivery on a Moscode today, so anxious to hear how it mates up with the CLX's!

More info to follow....

Moscode has been around for years. I remember hearing the NY Audio Labs version way back. Look forward to the review and where Moscode is now.

Im very curious to see just how much you can change the sound by rolling the tubes from the front panel. That could be very handy in fine tuning your system.

An intriguing design, that's for sure.

Well described on their web site.

One thing I just can't fathom though is why in 2009 people put up with (quote from site):
Keeping the 402Au tuned up just requires periodic replacement of low-cost small-signal tube pairs of which you can choose from many types.

It’s as if I’m at the Lexus dealer and he’s telling me I need to bring it in every 15K miles for new plugs. That might have worked back in the 60’s, but in ’09, cars can go for 100K+ on their plugs and amps should not require ‘tune-ups’.

For me, a good amp needs to perform consistently over time (like >15 years) with no further requirements than good steady AC juice.

A minor inconvenience if you like the sound of your tube amp. I cannot imagine giving up great sound just because of inconvenience...something like the great CD vs LP debate !

Ah, I see your point.

I guess I need to start thinking of tube gear as 'effects' boxes where instead of knobs, one changes tubes, adjsust bias, etc. etc. to get the desired effect.

It's great flexibility, is it not ? Also cheaper than buying a new SS amp to get the desired sound.

Have you ever wondered what your fave SS amp would sound like if the output transistors were biased so the idling current was a bit higher, or if you used the latest and greatest new transistor? You have? Guess you'll never find out the effects unless you get out your soldering iron and void the warranty.

Considering that a standard pair of small signal tubes lasts about 5000 hours if you buy current stock and up to about 20 thousand hours if you buy good NOS, the average person listening a few hours a week will probably go 10-15 years before needing replacements.

I ran my CJ ACT2 12 hours a day pretty much 6-7 days a week for four years before it needed tubes. That's about 17,000 hours, so for the average person listening three hours a day, three days a week that's about 35 years worth of tube life. Still pretty acceptable. Not all tube gear will go this long without tube replacement, but I doubt most people keep an amplifier 15 years anyway.

Power tubes are a different story.

Moscode makes it pretty easy to swap the tubes, so it's not like putting sparkplugs in your Lexus, which requires going to the dealer and taking time out of your day. You drop the front cover and change a few tubes. Can't take more than about 90 sec if you replace them all....

Having used the Premier 350 with the Magnepan 1.6's, it's true that they do benefit from more power, however it just seems kind of pointless to base an amplifier review on what it would sound like with a pair of them for a few reasons:

1. The average Magnepan owner doesn't buy 12K worth of amps to go with a pair of 1800 dollar speakers. Some do, but not most people.

2. Using a pair of amplifiers in a review makes it sound to the average reader like one isn't enough. Adds confusion to the mix.

3. While subtly changing the overall balance and tonality, I've never heard an amp that sounded as good bridged as it does in stereo mode.

4. In this economy, most mfrs. are trying to keep costs down, so asking them for a pair of amplifiers(and both way shipping) is a little bit greedy, don't you think?

In the end, why would I want to do the same thing that the Absolute Sound has done three years ago?

Now that the Moscode has a couple weeks on it, I am really enjoying it...

Not sure if I like it better on the CLX's or my Harbeth Monitor 40.1's though!

TonePub,

He might check his private messages if the PM link was much
more prominent on this site. Must be a better way to let us
know when we receive a PM. I know the PM link is there at
the top but it's so small you tend to forget about it. Weeks
have gone by before i noticed i have a PM. Is there a way to
make it blink or flash when you get a message?

Bernard,

That is correct. It is under the User Control Panel>Settings and Options>edit options. But I don't think most guys know it is there or have it set to notify them. Or the fact that you can select to be notified of PMs by email. I myself did not know it was there until just a short time ago.

For the longest time, I just relied on the idea of looking up at my PM window in the upper right corner of the MLC thread header window. Sometimes I would go weeks without noticing a PM in the Unread counter.

Anyway back to the original thread.

I once spent the coldest summer of my life in a house in Moscode or was that a house in Moscow? You know I hate getting old.:D

Guess you did not turn on the Moscode - those bottle-warmers keep the house nice and warm. :D

You should have a nice little box come up, center screen, alerting you to a new PM.

Is that what actually happens when you receive a PM
or are you making a suggestion ? If so, can you send me a test PM
to see if it works on my system?
