The dealer came through with a great deal on the Montis - even better than I expected so I am going to return the Spires and take the Montis. In the end, I am happy with the result.

Did he have the montis in stock? If not, what is the wait?

I worked for a hifi shop several years ago... the typical recommended mark-up was 100%. If a pair of speakers cost the dealer $1000, they would typically retail for $2000. So, if you get them for 50% off, you're likely getting them for something close to dealer cost. However, this was a decade ago, so margins may no longer typically be that high. And also, I'm only talking about A-Stock merchandise.

I travel the halls of CES each year spending some of my time with retailers. Each manufacturer sets their own rate but typically the retailer will get their merchandice at 60% off list for up to date high-end HiFi. Thus if you get 40% off you should be at about dealer price.
