Something from left field; Peter Frampton - Live in Detroit. Released May 2000, it was recorded at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in the summer of 1999. It is the first concert DVD to be released in High Definition TV format and 5.1 surround sound.

You will hear his hits and then some straight up rock and roll. He is still a serious guitar player. His performance of 'Off The Hook' from this project was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2001 (Peter's first Grammy nomination in nearly 25 years).

All jazz

“Clifford Jordan Quartet Live at Ethel’s” -- Mapleshade

Art Pepper “Live in Tokyo 1979" – JVC XRCD version; sounds like a different (and much better) set than the one on OJC

McCoy Tyner “Plays John Coltrane: Live at the Village Vanguard” – Impulse

Coleman Hawkins “Dali”(Washington, DC, 1959; Brussels, 1962) – Stash

Did someone say Reggae ?

for me its Lucky Dube Captured Live
but Trinity is prolly his best album.

I agree, Trinity is a strong, strong album.

Just so Indy music gets its due amid the Eagles, Toto and Fleetwood Mac mentioned in this thread ={)> - my favorite live disc is Ani Difranco's transcendant double-CD Living In Clip (named for her roadie's comment that "The stage amps are, like, living in clip"). Truly an amazing capture on media of the spontenaity, humor, virtuosity and occasional $^#-ups that characterize a really epiphanic live show.

Midnight Oil's Scream In Blue is another one that really captures the energy of the band.

Also worth a mention (possibly deserving of a separate thread) are one or two less ... official live recordings. Two that come to mind are Metallica / Tearing Your Insides Out and 10,000 Maniacs / How You've Grown; both are taken from the mixing boards and are of superior quality. Or so I've heard. From a friend. Whose name I forget.

Two other good ones, in Jazz !

Right now I'm listening to some vinyl:

- John Coltrane "Live at the Village Vanguard" (Impulse! LP)

Next in line:

- John Coltrane "Live at Birdland" (Impulse! LP)

Cheers !

Dead Can Dance - Toward the Within (CD)

I do not have many live albums and none of the legendary live albums that people speak mostly of. But by far this is the best live album I have heard in terms of sound and performance. Many of the tracks on this CD are better than their studio counterpart.

For the uninitiated Dead Can Dance is probably the most misunderstood duo in music history because of their name. It is NOT goth even though many goth kids from the 80's liked this band (again because of the name). Dead Can Dance takes old music (and by old I mean Middle Ages old) and gives it a modern update while staying true to the music itself. It is more homage than re-interpretation. Thus, the name Dead Can Dance.

If you only own one Dead Can Dance album, this is the one to own.

Let's keep this thread alive !

- The Ray Brown Trio "Live At The LOA - Summer Wind" (Concord Jazz - Hybrid SACD)

If you like live jazz, there is a lot of ambiance in this very fine recording !

Cheers,

Without a doubt: Nils Lofgren: "Acoustic Live"
A fabolous recording of a fabolous artist :)

Wow...Somebody that know Nils Lofgren!!!! Awesome artist...most know him from playing with Neil Young...but not many know him for his own albums.

What a wonderful selection of live recording...

Second that choice Kaliar! Plus Bill Evans "Waltz for Debby" which is the same group in the same venue on a different night. Thought about doing a review but never got around to it.

This is a killer recording on MLs! In fact I can't think of any in my own collection that sounds better. Turn the lights out and you've traveled back in time.

Others:
- John Coltrane's complete Village Vanguard set (4 CDs, haven't heard the LPs)
- Allman Brothers Live at Filmore East (LP, stay away from the DTS)
- Weather Report, 8:30 (LP)
- Frank Sinatra at the Sands (the DVD-A is nice recording)
- Eva Cassidy at Blues Alley
- Pat Metheny, Travels
- Joshua Redman, Spirit of the Moment (what is it with Village Vanguard sets)
- Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert (of course)
- Dave Brubeck (several)

Some good live DVD concerts not yet mentioned:
- Pat Metheny (We Live Here & Speaking of Now)
- Chris Botti & Friends
- Acoustic Alchemy: Sounds Of St. Lucia
- Boz Scaggs Greatest Hits
- Barbra Streisand (Timeless & MGM Grand)
- Toto in Amsterdam
- Jane Monheit (Rainbow Room & Taking a Chance on Love)
- DeJohnete, Hancock, Holland, Metheny In Concert
- George Benson Absolutely Live
- Casino Lights '99
- The Sessions At West 54th: Volume 1
- Harry Connick, Jr.: Only You
- Concord Jazz - Live at Montreux
- Diana Krall (Montreal)

Each one sounds good on MLs! Nothing like live recordings! (Well, except live music itself.)

Happy listening!

jfm,

As I looked back into the ML Club files of this preivous thread, I was pleasently surprised to discover, you had recommended Eva Cassidy to the group back in April, which is great... :D

I think, we have very similar tastes in music. I was going to review both Bill Evans Trio - "Waltz for Debby", as well as, "Sunday at Village Vangard", '20 bit K2 super coding' CD's , but I wanted to reviewed "Everybody Digs Bill Evans", first, as their are so many classic jazz Bill Evans compositions, on that paticular CD... :D

I whole heartedly agree with all of your live performance recommendations above...:D

Cheers

-Robin
