set #4 installed.

There was some loose tape on the bottom (I had to press it down) not sure if the mylar is ok. One piece of velcrow was off the speaker, found it after the rails were on. Ill have to go back later and check. The stator is not perfectly straight, but so far these seem to sound ok. Hard to tell right off though - they are so bright and unbroken in.

I must say, I am still blown away by how they sound, I am also blown away how service parts for a speaker that costs $4800 new are so shoddy.

Stator is not strait! They never are flat and smooth . They flatten out when compressed with the wood rails. Yes they will be bright for a few days run them all night and day with any music just to keep them playing. Velcro off, tape loose. The Velcro is held on with good sticky tape. I know I have tried to remove it ! Whats the manufacture date of these panels. The number should tell you every thing you need. Its on the upper corner. I find it hard that ML would hap haphazardly give you 4 bad sets of panels. 1 on mistake 2 by pure bad luck 3 from damage but there is no way they would make set #4 poorly. Its costing them money as they do not reuse the stators.

Give it to me and Ill tell you what you have !

RS TH 757 and RS TH 756. (set #4)

RS TE 717 and RS TE 716 (set #3- buzzing kazoo, but incidentally totally straight)

set 0 papa bear set, RS KJ 052 RS KJ 053

R = Request S= Service panel. T= manufactured in 08........H= August 756 means they were the 56 and 57 panel made that month. All service panels are 700 series.

Your panels were just made. What do you mean NOT STRAIT ?

if you look down a edge they are not totally straight... they are slightly bent some... set #3 is not like that.

Looking down the edge where the panels meet they are rarely perfectly strait. As soon as you put pressure on them against the wood rail and the frame they flatten out. As you see in the picture they are not connected at all on the sides.
Unless I'm not understanding you right. What are you referring too?

Here is my link to a Quest ReQuest tear down !

so set #4 bad. I was trying to be optimistic, but they are distorting when playing piano. Breakup type sound slapping mylar, tried cleaning, no dice, and they look very clean anyway.

RIght now im listening to mismatched pairs... its not great bet there are no glaring flaws, but the sound is not great.

I talked with logan, and they said the stators sat in a brown truck over the weekend. It hit 93 in omaha that weekend which is where they sit. We suspect damage.

Im not happy. Im going to be most likely making a trip to lawrence.
I also noticed the spars do NOT go all the way out to the VHB tape, there is a gap - unlike any other stators.

Its too bad they cant seem to make a consistent product.

I am amazed

I am amazed that this would happen four times. Are you dealing with Jim Power? Heat does not seem like it would hurt them at all. I heated the hell out of a set with forced heat. If you are getting distortion at loud volumes you either have loose Mylar or power transformers on their way out. I would take a hair dryer and go to town on the edges of the panels and see if that tightens them up. Then really look at the spar areas and heat each one at the spar. You will be supprised at what may happen. Hell you have nothing to loose. If you do go to ML take your whole crossovers with you...They will test them.

yes working with Jim. His suggestion about brown. They got back 2 sets and he confirmed set 1, ups damage, set 2 pucker / crease in film (but technically they should have been ok - his suggestion to swap), set 3 kazoo not confirmed yet by them.

I have swapped eletronics from side to side, each the time issue seems to be with a diff channel, this channel was OK before I put the new stators on. Its also fine now that i put the one good panel from the kazoo set.

I would like to see a pick of the spars

that is very strange.I also would not think that temps of a 90+ would hurt the panels its not like they where laying on the dashboard of the ups truck bare. you might want to bring your speakers with you and have them repanel them for you.

Do you have a dealer near you? If so, can you arrange for him/her to be around when the next set comes in or have ML ship them to the dealer.

In the many years that I have owned three ML products, I haven't heard of anyone having these many problems. The folks at ML really need to look into this and inspect the next set before they ship them.

dealer yes... but they told me point blank... "we dont stock or really sell martin logan stuff" it just sits??

when i moved out west 15 years ago my preamp didn't make the trip succesfully. the company suggested that i go to the local dealer so that they could help me get this sorted.

so i called the local high-end shop that was the dealer and was told that they didn't want to deal with me, and if they did would charge a fee for nothing more than shipping it to the company (on top of the shipping costs and repair fees and so on).

i called the company back and asked for a shipping address as i would rather deal with the hassle myself instead of being taken for a quick buck by the dealer.

20 minutes later i got a call from the dealer. apparently the company had given them a quick call and lesson in customer service...

perhaps ML could give your local dealer the same lesson.

the pre-amp was from my favourite electornics company - Meitner. great customer support.

i have to be honest and can't remember the store anycloser than it was in Vancouver on either 4th or broadway. needless to say i didn't stop by there again, and Meitner/Museatex closed up soon after that so I never had reason to either ;)
