yes Toumas is a fantastic composer (and lyricist). And he seems so sincere and into creating music. many pictures that i've seen of him depict him focusing pre-show, or while recording. Even after a full set he maintains this persona. a buddy and i saw NW a month ago and we stayed after and got a few auto graphs, Toumas included. A few girls asked for a hug from him and the way he embraced each one as if to say "thank you for your support, i appreciate you as fans." not creepy, just appreciative. it was cool to see a star still act this way. And speaking of Toumas, have you heard his side project band For My Pain ? i cant find there album in the local shops...but worth checking out...not quite as "epic" as NW or even Epica maybe...and mostly male fronted...good stuff.

I deffinately know what you mean about Anette's voice...even the way she dresses at shows is like as you put it (and i agree) pop-ish. the buddy i went to the concert with put it well "Tarja commands attention and seriousness while enjoying the music. Anette allows you to get into the muisc more easilly." ill certainly miss hearing a few songs that only Tarja could due (like the phantom of the opera cover, and a couple of songs sung in Finnish), but as a fan of NW i like the fact that the guys changed up styles...keeps them fresh if you will. Have you listened to Tarja's solo stuff?...thoughts?

I could write for days about this stuff, so i better button up soon. glad i can get some more bands of these stlyes...i have a few more bands with similar styles (and yeas i have heard symphony-x, also quite good) that might be of interest, but i might save them for another post...im tying to think of handful of other bands (not symph metal or prog) that might be of interest to ppl. I dont want to exludes anyone's fav. band cuz they dont fall into a particular genre...im just focussing on my favorites. There are probably other threads that discus fav. bands (and places for reviews), so stop me if this thread should be else where.

~Happy listening to all,
greg

p.s. time to dig into my growing list of new material!!!...this shall deffinately help with my personal quota of at least 1 new song a night.

Great suggestions by all but nothing really new. I must say Porcupuine Tree is definately one of my top 5 for rock.

Never heard of Nightwish. Sounds very, very interestng.

Fleet Foxes anyone?

Looks like you started a Nightwish and broader investigation that I hope others enjoy as much as we do. Well stated analogy by your friend in terms of Anette and Tarja and I agree there are some songs only Targa can pull off. If you don't have some of the concert DVDs you have to get them. End of an Era is a great place to start. As far as listening to Tarja's first independant release I have only heard clips. I almost picked up a copy at Rasputiens the other day but didn't. One of us will have to pull the trigger and send a review. I will definately try to find the solo project you referenced on T.

Sounds like more people have heard of the bands we are refering to although some are still pretty obscure outside of their home countries. To make it eaiser to review here is a list I recomend and welcome more. I am going to check out the ones Tom and others suggested I don't know about but here are some of the latest I have in constant rotation at the moment that I don't believe are mainstream and think warrant a listen:

Nightwish: Dark Passion Play (limited edition) or End of an Era
Epica: The Divine Conspiracy (Dutch)
Vanden Plas: Christo (German) Abydos (side project and musical)
Ayreon: 01011001 (German) but mix of really good artists/vocalists
Kamelot: The Black Halo (USA) or One Cold Winter's Night DVD
Within Temptation: The Heart of Everything (Dutch I believe)
Circus Maximus: Isolate (Danish I think)
SymphonyX: Paradise Lost
Delain: Delain (Dutch)
Threshold: Dead Reckoning (English)
Slient Force: I Walk The Earth (German)
Eden's Curse: Eden's Curse (USA)
The Poodles: Swiss I think
Gotthard: Domino Effect (Swiss)
Pink Cream 69: In10sity (German)
Jorn: Unlocking the Past (remakes of some rock standards but good)
Lillian Axe: Water Rising (USA)
Black Tide: (USA)
Poets & ****stars (USA)
New ****ographers: Challengers

More mainstream but good semi recent releases:

Seether: Finding beauty in negative spaces
Avenged Sevenfold: Latest white cover

my additions to johnwa's list. Not all are symphonic metal, but are at least metal (of some form or another).

Avantasia - The Metal Opera I and II (just watch out for the super slow ballad type songs...a bit cheeze

Dragonforce - Inhuman Rampage (wicked fast guitar- though not for everyone, the speed of these guys is impressive even if the music isnt your thing)

okay, so that is a pathetic addition, i sware there is more, but thats all of the 'calmer' metal that i currently own disks to--meaning metal that isnt super loud and mostly noise, i guess i cant help liking it, but boy is some of it trash haha!
and there are the bands you hear once or twice and can never remeber the name when you need it...so this list might grow if i rmember any (besides what i and johnwa have listed...john beat me to the list i supose:rolleyes: haha).

and johnwa, i do have a few DVDs: End of an Era, From Wishes To Eternity, and a DVD that came in a copy of the Highest Hopes album.

ive pondered Tarja's album a couple times as well. And as for Toumas' side project...ive only found used copies on amizon...

more lists of favorites (of OTHER genres) to come! ive got the house with no roommates for once and i must take this chance to get the living room alone! music here i come!!
