Guys I just don't know what to do! I recently picked up some EM-ESL's, and for the life of me I can't figure out why the vocals and drums are panned to the right no matter what I do!

My room is approximately 11' wide by 18' long. I have an open doorway on the right side of the room. Speakers are 4 feet off the wall as that's where the bass sounded the best. 1.5 feet off the side walls. Listening position is 8ft from each speaker. Toe-in is set up as per the manual using the flashlight method.

Any thoughts??????

Did you try swapping the speakers (or just swap left-right channels from amp) to see if the "lateralization" remains the same? If so, that eliminates the speakers as the problem. In that case, it's either an upstream component, cables, or the room. BTW, if you have tubes in the system, an unmatched pair (or set) could also cause that.

If it *IS* specific to the speaker, could be a bad (or dusty) panel.

Are the speakers new, or used?

They are used. Seemed ok at the store where I bought them. I have had them plugged in for over 24 hours. I put my ear next to the left speaker, and it sounds as though the bottom half of the left speaker is not emitting sound. I tried that cable swap...problem remained in the same speaker.

What did the store/dealer say? Do they have a return policy or otherwise offer assistance?

Sounds like it mght be a blown, or disconnected woofer, vs. the stat panel. However, you can unplug overnight, and vacuum the panels, just to make sure it's not just a heavy dust accumulation.

If that doesn't help, and you're "stuck" with it "as-is", call MartinLogan for help. Their support team is great, even if purchased used.

Do what sleepy suggests, but I also thing you might have an acoustical imbalance due to the opening on the right. But sort out the basics first.

I ended up taking them back to the used store where I bought them. They made a little fuss about it which I found pretty off putting. In the end I was able to return them. Will probably go to my local ML dealer and see what they have new.

Thanks for the help guys.
