although I do not doubt tonepubs sonic opinion I am with you on this on user211. the amp itself is nice looking but every time I look at the name it reminds me of a cheap beer mad in the good old USA. the speakers are really plane looking as well. are those components made to be rack mounted or what ???

Now if you want pretty for loads less dosh...:)

Well, I think so, anyway! Just quite proud of this really quite rare tube amp. Very few of these were built. Apologies to all the members who have seen it before...

Oh and Fish - MC275s look great in my book too!

And before I get slaughtered for being a hypocrite - the chrome finish is much less reflective than the Burmester gear, which is mirror like.

How are they connected...se or balanced? What ICs are you using?

You can connect either way, though their gear is fully balanced and they prefer it to be run balanced. I'm using it balanced with a full compliment of Shunyata's latest Aurora interconnects which I'm very excited about. I had Shunyata Anteres in my system before and the new Aurora takes everything another step, cleaner and more neutral. But it's pretty spendy.

We will also be listening to some of the reasonably priced Shunyata stuff later this summer and there will be an interview with Caelin Gabriel, the big cheese at Shunyata this issue.

The name reminds me of a rather fine port ...made in Portugal, of course. I really like the look of the Burmester stuff.

So Justin, what would you consider the best-looking gear ?

A lot of it is in the Really Tasty Gear thread - created entirely for this purpose.

But you have got me thinking - what is the system I would put together based entirely on looks, not sonics, money no object? Lemme think for a bit...

Oh yeah, I'd much rather have something like that in my listening room than the Burmester stuff. NOT.

Let's face it Justin, you like the curmudgey, vintage bottle look. Nothing wrong with that, but for all the comments about Americans having no taste, the stuff you like looks pretty garage built...

Especially when there is some awfully nice looking gear coming out of the UK.

Pretty easy about going for the aesthetics, but not have to compromise the sound at all....

Turntables: SME, Clearaudio, Spiral Groove, Rega
CD Players: Naim, Burmester, Nagra
Power and Pre: Naim, Burmester, Nagra
Speakers: ML, Verity, Meridian, Zu, JM/FOCAL

If I wanted a little more retro look, I'd go with McIntosh or Luxman

If I wanted a bit more understated (especially with a smaller system) I'd go with Rega all the way or perhaps Linn

Perhaps a bit more futuristic, Classe

Or make it really simple and just have a Meridian F80!

There are obviously some others, but that would be where I'd start.

Hm... the taste remarks, at least I thought, applied to interior decor, not hi-fi.

But yeah, I agree about my gear taste.

I guess I don't really like sterile looking boxes - which applies to so much in hi-fi. I find it totally boring. Much better something hand built by some nutcase in a garden shed, I think. And as we all know, I do love the look of those glowy glass bottley things.

I think the US produces some stunning looking hi-fi. But then so do a lot of other countries.

And yeah, after the post I thought what you just said - you can build a pretty stunning sounding system with great looks too.

This might be quite nice - Air Tangent TT, their parallel tracker, some elegant exotic bodied Koetsu, Cary SLP-98P (always loved that for looks - bit out of it's depth here), full Jadis JA800 rig with tube covers permanently off, 4x CLX Anniversary - two per channel, put together to give the impression of the frame surrounding the whole, 2x Descent I. Possibly an Oracle CD etc.

Maybe I'd junk the CLXs for some huge Soundlabs, grills off, just for the "Oh my god, what the hell are those?" factor...:)

Then again, some AvantGarde Trios and the bass units would look pretty cool, and not too bad to listen to, either.

Let's face it, the options/permutations are almost endless... spoilt for choice!

Justin, you surprised me. I thought you would say you like the 1950s Quad look best.

personal opinion is so thickle. some may say "player hater" but I believe USER211 is genuine in his opinion. you remind me much of a life long friend who enjoys much of the same flavors you do. if you questioned him about his opinion with remarks such as that is "garage built" he would just reply "its more human that way".
