Breitling vs Rolex vs Omega

Hey fellas,

As an extension of my original watch thread, I was wondering what you folks had in mind between these two fine watchmakers.

I am really into the Rolex GMTII, the Explorer, and the Submariner. I did not get to see how much the Sea Dweller cost so I'm not sure if that's in the running.

I also really liked the Breitling SuperOcean SteelFish. I don't think I've ever put on anything more manly on my left wrist ever.

Omegas are good too... but I haven't spent too much time looking into them. I like the Seamaster, though the Speedmaster looks killer.

Anyway, just a quick poll to see which watch you'd side with if you could only have ONE watch (forever).

I totally agree with Lugano Joey, oh BTW, I own a Rolex (GMT master II) and collect both pocket and wrist watches. Rolex is a fine watch but no where near what alot of people think ! no disrespect to your mother !!

Nope, if I can only choose between the three you have given us then I'll take the Omega. But in the world of "affordable" mechanical watches I side with George, his Bulova Accutron is superb.

As I stated before, I love my Rolex. I fell in love with the watch's style 40+ years ago, long before I found out how expensive they were. Since I got mine back in '88, its been my only watch, and if I'm awake I'm almost certainly wearing it.

I refuse to spend that much on a watch that every second person has on their wrist. How many people have Rolexes? They're a bit like a Sony to me. Go for something original!

None of my friends have the Rolly (or any of the three)... maybe we're poor or too young.

Agreed! Having worked in the Caribbean for the past 12 years or so, higher end watches are the norm, and basicly, Rolex = boat trash (tossed out at regattas like candy), Breitling = obnoxious brit (somehow these two attract one another), Omega, Patek Phillippe, et al = gifts from loved ones.*

One thing I learned, nothing pleases all. Best bet? Methinks get one from each brand.

Sad part about this poll is that I have all three. The worst time piece of the bunch is the one I wear daily. If you own more than one automatic or do not plan on wearing one for an extended period of time, you must buy yourself a watch winder. Unlike many think, it is not to keep the watch wound but rather to keep the oils circulated on the inside of the watch which maintains the life of the watch.

I'll let you folks guess which is my daily wearer.

One of the secrets to better time keeping with a Rolex is to be sure to supplement the 'automatic' winding with a few manual turns of the stem every day.

Ok...am jumping in again. Geeze, I am gone for a year and they make twich54 a "moderator"? :rocker:

Out of the three, the Rolex is without a doubt, the worst time piece. I have my fourth Rolex on my wrist as I type this. As for the manual winding, count your stem turns and use the same amount each day. But, the real trick to keeping a Rolex "on-time" is keeping that bugger cleaned a minimum of once every 2 years. Now that is just about as expensive as an oil change on an older Mercedes when done at a reputable dealership. The trick is to find out where your "Authorized" Rolex dealer sends their excess watch repairs and go direct. Cleanings that used to cost me close to $160.00 now cost me about $100.00 less since I found the guy that my Jeweler uses. Many years ago, I was in that business and bought my first Rolex at wholesale. Today I wear the two-tone Submariner as I think it is the most beautiful watch ever produced and has been duplicated by every watch manufacturer on the planet. Can't beat classic styling even though the time piece is overated and overpriced. sigh...

I have no idea which is the worst time piece.... all I know is there are complaints rom people I've talked to. I have some who say that they're Rolex needs servicing every 5 years and that's a pain in the you know what...

Then I have others telling me that they've had to bring their Breitling over the AD so many times that they gave up on it.

Though surprisingly, I haven't heard much about Omega...
