Hey all! Coming to you from Connecticut...

My first ML's are still being used in my main living room....motion 4's circa 2014. I can push these things and they can take all of it...NEVER heard clipping or anything from them no matter how much power i try and throw at them. they're the mains in my living room setup and the family has been enjoying them for 10 years..

Well here we are in 2024/2025 and i have grown man money and grown man needs. finally finished my bonus room and turned it into a primary home theater space quasi home office.

Now i'm running XT B100's for my fronts and an XT C100 for center. my rears are XTC8's. Dolby atmos are RSL C34E MKII's. Sub PSA TV21-NeoM.

Receiver Pioneer LX505.
my 3 front ML's are powered by a OSD nero 5200 amplifier.

I'm trying to see what this system is capable of...i keep hearing about reference being 105db....when i try and push the system i can get to maybe 95db and it's still tolerable listening wise and friends and family love it. I'm only turning the receiver up to +5 to get there but it can go farther. The problem is the other night testing it out i heard my first little bit of clipping and had to back it off.

I thought these speakers could handle a LOT of power.....maybe i'm delivering them too much power with the nero 5200?

Cruthfield was recommending i get rid of the ML's and go with a monitor audio gold 50 6g because they can take a lot of power and have lower sensitivity. But i've never heard them and feel a certain love for martin logan given my experience these last 10 or so years.

Is this amplifier not correct for these speakers? am i doing something wrong?

I have DIRAC on the receiver and just got the dedicated mic in the mail but haven't had the time to dedicate and run the full REW...

Initial thoughts on my challenge would be appreciated. i want to at least "hear" what 100db + sounds like and just want to know if my system is capable or not and how do i get there

95db is pretty loud. A typical night club is around 100db, and 105db would more than double the 95db loudness-- yikes!

Was it the speaker or your amp clipping?

The only 'clipping' I've heard from an ESL occurred on one of my older versions that used perf-metal stators, when the diaphragm smacked a stator. It was quite loud and scary, although it did no real damage.

Honestly I'm not sure.... The noise was kind of a quick pop during audio playback pretty sure from the speakers. Keep in mind I don't think these are esls....they are bookshelf xt b100s.

Please be careful with sound pressure levels...

Where are you in CT? I am in Central.
Ive got hearing damage from loud concerts. Ive got tinnitus now. After many years I tune it out now and it really does not bother me unless I think about it, like right now. I probably should have worn ear plugs at all of the concerts I went to. I also played my car stereo really loud in high school. My ears would ring after that. Hearing loss can happen at a young age.

I'm using a phone app to gauge spl. Watched top gun tonight again and it was reading 89db with my pioneer at -10. I don't think this thing is right....this week i promise to hook up the mic and run rew for the first time and I'll report back.
