Spent a day with the BIG Soundlab M1

I know the system C.A.P describes since it belongs to one of my clients. The latest PX technology which the M-1s he heard do not have makes a substantial difference, especially in terms of imaging, detail, and dynamics. There's more "there" there -- hard to describe but instantly audible...

    CLX ....dreamin'

More relevant comparisons could be made against speakers of somewhat similar designs, such as Quad, Sound Lab, and perhaps Magnepan.

    What Happened to Audiogon???

They forgot to renew the domain, so the home page is temporarily replaced with a boilerplate page. The rest of the site appears to be there.

    Checking Azimuth with Multimeter

Glen, the standard version of the software is 249 Euros which at the moment is about $340, while the Pro version costs 399 Euros or $543. Where the phase angles of the left and right channels intersect or come closest to each other, minimum phase error is achieved. It is possible to measure such...

    Checking Azimuth with Multimeter

Although there isn't enough information presented in your post to say for sure, chances are that tilting the cartridge to get the numbers to most closely match each other is the best setting based on these measurements. Phase error is even more audible, and the angle at which this is minimized...

There is this recent thread on AA on the topic, notably including posts by Stereophile editor John Atkinson and Charles Hansen of Ayre Acoustics.

    Audio Karma Festival !

I attended the show for a few hours on Saturday. My picks for the top three rooms were: JM Reynaud/Blue Circle/Audio Note DeVore/Naim Atma-Sphere/Classic Audio/TriPlanar There are probably two or three others. JMR is about the only one I find that gets a ribbon tweeter to sound acceptable...

    new cleaning machine

It may be wise to be careful about using DI water - its pH is not neutral, hence it can be corrosive.

    phono cartridge lifespan

Cartridge life depends on several things: tracking force, how clean or dirty the records are, stylus profile, and cartridge and arm alignment (for example, incorrect azimuth translates to increased force per unit area, leading to more stylus and record wear). Listening for 2 hours a day, average...

    new cleaning machine

Ditto. The machine gregadd showed is handled by Axiss Distribution. I believe it sells for about $6500.

Have you ever heard a digital recording meet or exceed an analog recording?

Digital is AMR, analog is Kuzma and/or Feickert with Shelter. Specifics can be deduced by visiting my website or contacting me offline. Comparisons can be made using the least expensive analog rig. With the more costly analog setups the differences are more pronounced. That said, the digital is...

    Question about Martin Logans

Not sure what you have in mind by "really wide dispersion and off axis response", as some panels do very well, in fact much better than cone speakers in terms of full frequency response, especially when the panel is driven full range. High frequency beaming can be a problem with some panel...

    Next Step......

The forthcoming Parasound Halo C 3 high definition surround processor has the features you seek. In all likelihood Richard Schram of Parasound will show a preproduction unit at the Chicago Audio Society meeting in two weeks.

Have you ever heard a digital recording meet or exceed an analog recording?

Gordon, the digital reference here has several upsampling and oversampling modes which can be selected on the fly to suit the recording and one's taste. I generally prefer one of the non-upsampling, non-oversampling modes it provides. That said, as good as the digital is, the reference analog...

Have you ever heard a digital recording meet or exceed an analog recording?

Back on topic, there aren't too many CDs that outshine the LP versions of the same recordings. An exception, I was told by a reliable source, is Andreas Vollenweider's Book of Roses CD, long out of print but available used. I purchased the CD on that basis quite a while ago and am satisfied, and...

    Super tweeter

Hi Tom, Long time. Hope you're enjoying life back in Chicago. Addressing your comment: It does. Hear a line source that's full range and you'll understand. I listen to acoustically crossoverless dipoles all the time. High frequencies are very directional, which emphasizes the differences...

    new cleaning machine

I hear you regarding appearance. I tend toward form follows function and top performance. My record cleaner isn't in the same room, even though it is quiet enough to use while listening to music...that was a big plus after the 16.5, though the results were even more impressive.

    new cleaning machine

Fish Man, I owned a VPI 16.5 for quite a few years but changed to a Loricraft PRC3 several years ago soon after they showed at CES. The difference in results was stunning. The Loricraft costs quite a bit more today but has little competition. That said, the VPI is a good value. If you'd like to...

Speaker Competition @$30K: Good Bye WP8, Hello Sasha

With each iteration Wilson churns out every year or so, the price goes up. I would expect the Sasha to go for at least $35k if not more, and I'll bet low to mid 40s. There is a large price gap between the WP8 and the Maxx 3. Fortunately there are other choices.

    Soundlabs vs. Logans

Hi David, I haven't but think Sound Lab may be warmer, obviously depending on the room and associated equipment to some degree. The only real way to know is by auditioning.
