    Modifying two Descents for HT

What started out as a basement two-channel audio room project has changed course and is now slated to be a dedicated theater. With two young children in the family and many more in the neighborhood, I can see how my wife favors the theater idea. Since the theater is going to be one of those...

Where do you purchase your veneer materials from? I have a cabinet project coming up but havent found a good source. Tj

The Really Tasty Gear Thread - With Pictures!

That's a 1520? If I recall, the only machine in the 1500 series that switches between NAB/IEC, unless Jeff did some internal mods. Nice machine; handles tape well. Tj

Where did you source the boards/heatsinks from? Tj

    My LM3886TF weekend project

Very nice! Some of the chip amps have excellent specs, and are even making their way into high-powered tube amps as driver stages. http://www.electra-print.com/techblog.php?blogid=7 I am thinking about using one to drive my PP 304TL amplifier. In this case a single Pentawatt device can...

I wonder what the guys at TAS will think about the video  Tj

Lexicon pawns off an Oppo BDP83 as theirs?

Theta did that a number of years ago with their Voyager laserdisc player. If you took the top off you found an entire Pioneer LD player, chassis and all (the Theta was a enormous unit). They claimed to have designed their own digital processing stage which somehow added up to a unit that...

my jolida is here OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!

Great tube, like most transmitting tubes it gives exceptional performance for audio-frequency use due to the relatively small area of its operating range we are asking it to work in. On the Jolida website they describe the circuit topology as AB ultra-linear.....but its not a pentode, correct...

    Any Planned Upgrades For 2010?

This is my hardware upgrade for 2010...a project which is already several years in the making. Amplifiers based on transmitting tubes are becoming popular among the DIY SET crowd, and after sitting in on a few listening sessions, I'd have to admit that some of the designs sound good...very good...

    Any Planned Upgrades For 2010?

I am building a new dedicated two-channel room in the basement, but there is no definite goal of having it completed this coming year. Room is 18 x 39 feet, the stairs from the upper floor separate the room into a main listening area, with two hallways that lead to a rear media-storage area.

    Are Cassettes Making a Comeback??

Cassettes, along with 8-tracks, were disappointing formats. Both were designed to be brought to market cheaply, sort of mediocre music for the masses. Tape speeds were too slow, and track widths were much smaller than necessary for proper hi-fidelity magnetic recording, done on the cheapest...

    Anyone here use cordless nailers?

With a few big remodeling projects coming up, I've thought about getting a cordless nailer. It used to be you would hear them on jobsites and obviously they were pneumatic (I dont have a compressor), but more and more I see carpenters carrying around cordless guns even for fairly large jobs...

    Krell Sold???!!!!!

Have a little faith, Chris. Krell's following in the high-end marketplace is big enough that the new owners would be wise to stay with the likes of previous offerings. Or at least, we would hope. It will be interesting to see how well they treat older customers as far as service/repairs. My...

    If not ML...what other speaker?

I'd love to try a set of horns, perhaps Avantgarde or Klipsch, powered by a few watts of SET amplification. This would have to be a system secondary to my main listening rig, though, and geared mainly towards jazz or blues sessions. Tj

    TT & subs = Rumble/woofer pumping?

Over the weekend I came across a TT on the basement shelf....forgot it was there. The name escapes me; supposedly from England. Unlike the VPI, this table has a very heavy platter that sits on a spring-loaded base. This can easily be swapped out with the VPI to see just how much the speaker/sub...

    TT & subs = Rumble/woofer pumping?

So the general consensus is that the TT is picking up floor/subwoofer vibrations which in turn are getting pumped back into the system? Admittedly the room layout is not ideal, but it is temporary. I have an 18 x 39 foot basement room in the works, (listening area will be 18x26, the rest will...

    TT & subs = Rumble/woofer pumping?

Risabet- Here's two photos showing the room prior to painting and treatments, we've moved some of the equipment around to install under-soffit lighting but the layout remains the same. Krell amplifiers have since been replaced by Atma-Sphere MA1's. Front end is a Krell KPS25s, turntable...

    TT & subs = Rumble/woofer pumping?

Gordon- Take a look at this thread: http://www.martinloganowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8180 I ran into a situation where my twin Descents were picking up, for lack of a better term, 'excess low end information' while listening to vinyl....a problem which still persists (mainly because...

    Tubes Are Better Because...

That's the second iteration of a 304TL circuit I penned up several years back. The first attempt used cathode bias with no NFB and a transformer-based input stage; common design procedure in Japan amongst the DHT crowd. Sounded great, but difficult circuit requires better parts. New amp will...
