    The DON / redux

If anyone is wondering how America’s reputation in the world is faring these days, check out this headline from a South African newspaper: Source: https://mg.co.za/article/2017-12-05-trump-endorses-accused-child-molester-moore-for-senate I mean, on the one hand, who cares what a South...

    The DON / redux

Timm, I think you are underestimating the effectiveness of a good psy-ops campaign. The ads themselves were simply aimed at getting us to argue with ourselves over hot button issues (BLM, abortion, guns, etc.). The more political division, both between d’s & r’s, and between progressive d’s and...

    The DON / redux

Timm, I just saw your post above. I concede that you make some very salient points. But you act like it’s an even/or thing. Perhaps there was a backlash toward the dems, toward globalization, toward eight years of a black man in the White House. And perhaps Trump colluded with the Russians and...

    The DON / redux

Touching on the Roy Moore saga again, I just wanted to point out something relevant for those of you who aren’t from this state and may not see all the related news. For many years Alabama has had two Senators, Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby. I’ve met Sessions before, and always thought he was...

    The DON / redux

Timm, I think democrats understand that Hillary wasn’t a perfect candidate. That’s why so many supported Sanders. But she was definitely qualified, having served as a Senator and Secretary of State. And I think democrats understand that she wasn’t charismatic like her husband. And certainly, she...

    The DON / redux

Brad, I have no agenda. I do have very strong opinions, which are based on my knowledge, experience, and my own analysis of what I read. I also use common sense and a basic understanding of human psychology. Why has almost everyone involved in the Trump campaign lied or mislead regarding their...

Ooh, my wife can relate to that.

    The DON / redux

Brad, did you even read the article? Do you have some dispute with the facts and analysis it laid out? Or did you just want to dismiss what I have to say as biased because I’m not equally citing Breitbart? The Hill has some of the most centrist reporting of Washington politics and policy that...

Media room – quad ML sub setup

Proud of you for finally retiring that old workhorse ... and regaining access to your audio sweet spot in the process. My 10-year old JVC RS1 is still chugging along, now on its third bulb. I’m also looking forward to eventually upgrading to a laser-illuminated projector.

Media room – quad ML sub setup

Exactly this! Beyond a certain point, which we have already passed, higher resolution is just a marketing gimmick. Wider color gamut, higher dynamic range, and better image processing are advances that actually benefit consumers.

    The DON / redux

Coming back to this topic, I wanted to provide a link to an article that makes my point much clearer than I ever could. Highly recommended reading: http://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/363060-missing-big-picture-in-flynn-plea-trump-team-crippled-american-diplomatic

    The DON / redux

And I agree with you 100% on that point. And I do think it is this sort of rabid tribalism (on both sides) that has given us the sort of corrupt, dysfunctional government that we have now.

    The DON / redux

And that’s one of the big reasons people don’t do due diligence and vote for candidates based on their true qualifications. It’s much simpler and less time consuming to buy into a particular viewpoint and vote straight party line. Which is one of the reasons we have the government we have. For...

    The DON / redux

Timm, I don’t think it’s a case of people not knowing who to trust; I think it’s more along the lines of most people implicitly trust or don’t trust particular media outlets based upon their own preconceived political biases. Unfortunately, the line between actual news and opinion/entertainment...

Old Gear Out; New Gear Incoming!

I have to admit, Gordon, I didn’t really notice any obvious changes with my Premier 17 LS2 pre (which came with the Teflon caps). But then, I bought it as a dealer demo and have no idea how many hours it had on it when I placed it in my system. Plus, that was at the beginning of my hifi journey...

Old Gear Out; New Gear Incoming!

Yeah, those Ayons will eat you alive on tube replacement cost. I get that the Accuphase amps sound great (and that’s impressive given their age) but what happens when one of those Caps blows? Will it take out a circuit board with it? That’s one of the reasons I’m hyped to upgrade the CJ. I’ve...

Old Gear Out; New Gear Incoming!

Nice pics, Justin. But I have to say it: that room needs more acoustic treatments! By the way, those accuphase monos have got to be classics. Have you fiddled with their innards any? Edit: and holy crap, those tube amps are gorgeous! I’m running some Tung-Sol KT-120s in the CJ right now...

Ascent i - any known issues

Agreed, timm. I also highly recommend biamping them, with 200 to 400 wpc solid state amps on the woofers and a tube amp on the panels. That setup makes the Ascents sing.

Ascent i - any known issues

Not really, at least that I know of. They are old and could be nearing end of panel life, depending on how well they were cared for. You may want to call ML customer service and ask if they still offer replacement panels and what they cost, just so you know what you are facing if a panel does...

    Used or New purchase?

Well, considering I own a pair of ten-year old Summits and a pair of seventeen-year old Ascents, no concerns. You could easily expect another ten to fifteen years or more out of those speakers, assuming they’re well-cared for. Edit: And ML has been good in the past about offering replacement...
