My thought on ESL pros/cons and design challenges

Hi all, I wanted to post my thoughts on ESL pros and cons, etc... but a post only allows 1k characters so please see the attached PDF if interested. BTW: Considering that I don’t own any Martin Logan speakers (just a fan), the warm welcome I received on joining this forum was a pleasant...

    Hi and thanks MLO

I'm another proponent of the DBX Venu 360-- it's marvelous! I would never go back to passive crossovers. Efficiency, tighter bass, phasing, tonal quality--all better with the passive crossover out of the way. And the tuning capabilities are practically infinite. The user interface (I-pad...

    New CLS Owner

In order make sound an ESL needs AC drive voltages on the stators (from the amp / step-up transformer) and a DC biasing voltage on the diaphragm (from the bias supply) for the drive voltages to react against. If the bias supply is faulty or its wire-to-diaphragm contact is corroded, or the...

    New CLS Owner

Hopefully I'm wrong but I'm gonna say it: I think you're beating a dead horse. And I'm wondering how many watts were being pumped into those speakers when you auditioned them. I think it's very unlikely that both speakers would malfunction in transit, and low output is consistent with the...

    Hello, Everyone!

Welcome Jesse, You're so right about ML's saving you money in the long run. ESLs are so addictive that most of us never think about other speakers, and instead focus on our other gear. The folks here welcomed me to the forum even though my ESLs are homebuilts. Enjoy the ML Forum! Charlie

    EFX Panel Repair

You might want to save those old panels to play with someday :-) If you're handy and up for it, you could replace the spacer/adhesive tape and install new diaphragms. Whatever tape you need would be available from McMaster-Carr online. And the 12-micron Mylar C that ML uses is available on...

    EFX Panel Repair

Assuming you have isolated the problem to the panel (i.e. swapped panels or power supplies and the problem followed the panel); there are then only three possible causes-- but you will have to remove the front stator to determine which one it is. I judge from the photos in the previous post...

    Yet another Ripole sub project

Hi Steve, The real RiPol gurus are on the DIY Audio Forum, subwoofer section. I would go there and query posts by "Rudolf" and "Calvin", and post your questions in that forum. But since you've asked, I will give you my gut feel on those Sundown woofers: They're too big :-) Let me...

    New panels, sound the same?

Other speaker options were mentioned in this thread prior to my posting but I do apologize if I've offended anyone, and have no objection to the moderator moving (or removing) my post.

    Yet another Ripole sub project

I assume you were referring to the Modal Akustik subs, which are indeed made of stacked layers of polycarbonate plastic. Polycarbonate is a very strong/rigid plastic so I doubt it adds any objectionable sonics.

Just wondering if you're a heavy metal fan 8-)

    Yet another Ripole sub project

I've received requests for an easier-to-build version of my Ripole sub so I've drawn one up that omits the rounded edge members; living the plywood edges exposed. Below is a screenshot of the drawing. If anyone wants the CAD drawing just PM me an email address.

    Yet another Ripole sub project

The Modal Akustik subs are stacked layers of alternating clear and colored (black or white) polycarbonate plastic. Mine are red oak.

    Yet another Ripole sub project

FYI: As mentioned earlier in this thread; I recently learned of a German company, Modal Akustik, marketing a Ripol subwoofer in collaboration with the inventor, Axel Ridtahler. And it happens that the Modal Akustik sub and my sub use the same Peerless SLS 12 woofers. Six Moons Audio...

    Yet another Ripole sub project

The opposing woofers are wired in parallel (push/push). The comparison to isobaric is a good question for which I don't feel qualified to answer, but my initial impression is that the two designs are similar in that both sides of the woofer(s) are within chambers. I'm wondering if isobaric...
