As per the manual, it is advised to keep the speakers about 2-3 feet away from the front wall. Do they mean the distance from the panel or from the rear edge of the bass cabinet. My room measures 15' by 13', listening position is about 13 feet from the front wall. I have a sliding glass window in the front wall and the system rack is placed towards the front wall in the center. What placement will be to start with. Acoustically the room is quite bad.
You may refer to the set up to have an idea which is given below:

I would start with the PANELS 2-3 ft out, and go from there. Remember that panel TILT and TOE-IN will also significantly affect soundstage tonality and imaging.

Thanx for the info. Did you mean 2'-3' from the panel or from the end of the woofer unit

I'm fairly positive he means the stator panel itself, not the 'body' that contains the subwoofers. Its the rear 'effect' of the panels that are being affected by the surrounding walls.

I meant the stator PANELS. Depending on your room acoustics, etc, you might find they sound better even FARTHER out from the back wall. Experiment and listen.

My room is about 16 x 14. I prefer my Summits 60 inches from the back wall, which opens up the soundstage and minimizes bass resonances. Consider trying the extra tweak placement in the Summit owners manual or Cardas' website recommendations (very similar to the extra tweak). Prepare to be astounded!

The further the panel from the wall the better.

Summit Replacement with Magies 3.6 R

I have Summit since November 2006. I am thinking of replacing with Magies 3.6 R. I recently audition these speakers and I feel the body of the music is very well defined. Before taking a decision for Summit, I was not sure whether Plinius SA102 could drive them. I have a room measuring 25' by 13' and listening position is 1' from the front wall. I am finding it difficult to position these speakers in terms of imaging vs bass boom. I have been using Martin Logan for the last 10 years. Previously I was using SL3 no problems whatsoever great speakers. I am facing a few problems too in the Summit like 30% lower output in the right channel - got resolved by replacing the PSU card, then developed buzzing noise in the left and right channel from different spar. Awaiting for the new pair of Stat Panels. That way I must say that Jim Power is so prompt and responsible.

Bottom line for migrating are as follows:

1. No active electronics component in Magies vs Summit

2. Not affected by Dust or Humidity

3. Noticed the body of any music is wholesome in Magies (mostly listen to Jazz)

Can anyone advice me more? Hope Plinius SA-102 can drive the Magies? That is the only doubt I have!!!

first off you never gave your Summitt's the correct "space" ! As a former Maggie owner for twenty years I can tell you that if you place them like you did you Summitt's they too will sound poor !!

With regards to the SA-102, you should be Ok, it depends on SPL , remember the Maggies will be more taxing than the Summitt's !

Good Luck !!

Twich is absolutely right! I auditioned Maggie 3.6s prior to buying Summits and owned a pair of Apogees for 13 years. Electrostatics, ribbons, and magnetic planars need SPACE to sound their best. Maggies and Apogees generally need MORE SPACE than MLs. If you cannot give them space you are probably better off with cones and domes.

Auditioned the Maggies on better gear than mine... no way the 3.6R beats out a properly placed Summit.

BUT, you gotta trust your ears... and I think the Plinius will have ample power to hunker down those 3.6R badboys.

Enjoy!

I don't get it

Dear ABHIJIT,

Assuming your Summits are working per ML specs, and with all due respect, I don't understand your issue given the fact that you've owned ML's for ten years. I had the SL3's before upgrading to the Summits. Had the SL3's for five years or so and loved them. Bought the Summits with no audition but was confident, after having the SL3's, the Arieus and CLS2A's, that I would be very pleased with the upgrade. And I am.

Looked at your pictures and it seems to me that your room / equipment / setup poses no significant obstacles to optimizing Summit placement to attain a sound many of our dear club members would die for.

The bass crossover adjustments allow those, fortunate enough to have the Summits, to fine tune any room based bass analomies and create a well balanced, dimensional, sonic experience that is absolutely engaging.

I also have my Summits placed five feet out from the back wall (measured from the front of the panel) and find no bass standing wave issues.

Sounds to me, based on the information you provided, that there is something major wrong, with either the Summit crossover settings or your placement of the speakers. I, like many others, don't want to criticize the Maggy's. They are, by any reasonable measure, a great speaker company. However, my sense is that you may be making a "switch" decision, based on very dubious criteria.

Good luck.

GG

I seriously considered the 3.6/R's before finally deciding on the Summits. I liked the maggies because they offered a big room filling sound and were well priced. But what I did notice was the propensity of the maggies to glare when pushed hard. And the bass, while full, lacked definition and punch. This is all in comparison to the Summits of course. I have to say that there is no way you can compare the 3.6/R's to the Summits. The Summits are in a totally different league. I reckon a more fair comparison would be with the 20/R...

Thanx guys for your advice. I will work hard to reposition my speakers and will update you all about the tonal quality. But what happens to the aging of electronics component in Summit. What about the dust and humidity?

You have warranty for many more years, around 4 more right?

Besides, if you truly wanted to upgrade or move camps, which I'm not saying you should or shouldn't, go with the 20.

Both the stator panels have been replaced today. Highs are little louder. Couple of questions:

1. Does one has to wait for 250 odd hours for burn-in to even out the highs?

2. Are these new panels prone to Humidity and Dust like the the old SL3

It will take the panels some time to fully break in. I have not experienced problems with dust or humidity, but I live in Texas, not Kuwait, so my idea of dust is likely not yours!
