I just read a review of this device. Sounds like a neat idea for those with home wifi networks. Before dropping 2 big ones, I am interested to see if anyone has heard this device or used it. I know Squeezebox has been around for a while but this is an alleged upgrade.
I am interested in getting uncompressed radio through my M-L system. This might be one solution.

A local audiophile has a SB 3 and then upgraded to the Transporter. I have not heard it but he says it is very close to his transport/dac combo. I must say that I have a SB3 going to my DAC (digital) and it is not even close to the transport/dac/jitter combo. Yes, for $300 vs. 11K it's not bad but not the same. He say's it is.....

Streaming technology is inching it's way towards the pinnacle of sound. The 3rd generation Squeezebox is excellent, especially when feeding a quality DAC, and now the (4th generation) Transporter has taken it to the next level. Most (but not all) reviewers and internet posters are raving about it, finding it virtually comparable to uber expensive transport/DAC combos, retailing over $10k. The fact that it graces the cover of the Feb S'phile, and has a laudatory review from Wes Phillips, despite never having been advertised in the magazine, is further proof of it's revolutionary impact.

For the past two years I have been using a Squeezebox as my primary source. Admittedly, it only achieves perhaps 95% of the sound of my CD player, but excels in ease of use, and has allowed me to ENJOY far more of my music collection than ever before. Add in the myriad Internet Radio stations, and custom streams from Pandora, and the entire experience surpasses everything else.

If it weren't for the fact that I recently purchased the Modwright Pre and Benchmark DAC1, I would definitely have purchased the Transporter. The only technical failing of the device, as far as I can tell, is the lack of a Home Theater bypass. I am hopeful that Slimdevices (as a company and team) will survive under the new Logitech ownership. If they do, there will definitely be a Transporter in my future (hopefully the next generation will include the HT bypass).

Does it display information on your TV or just over the display on the SB/Transporter?

I was wondering because I have a decent amount of music and searching through it for the song i want seems difficult without a good menu system or something

If anyone has screenshots, that would be cool too -- right now I stream my mp3's through my xbox 360....it is al alright interface (no search or anything)

I've been in the same dilemma also. I've been thinking of a Transporter or an outboard DAC just for the SB3. I'm looking for a warm and clean sound... the thing I dont like about buying the Transporter, is that once I get it, I'm pretty much stuck in terms of DAC selection because the reason why I'm buying it is because of the DAC itself.

While over to my sons house after the holidays I got to listen to his two systems, one of which has the "squeezebox thingie" and the other has the transporter gizmo that Stereophile just reviewed. Now I must say that being somewhat of an "Old analog crumudgeon" I was skeptical, but after a listening session I came away quite pleased indeed !

Sleepysurf hit the nail on the head with respect to 95% of the quality and tons more convienence ! My only concern is that for the computer challenged indiviuals, like ME, it appears rather daunting !! FWIW, my son,who is an engineer said the transporter piece even tried his patience somewhat.

Here's one shot, lots more and info at www.slimdevices.com

It has a dual high-res fluorescent displays, which can be customized, including and option for faux analog meters. It uses cascading menus for control, and a basic, yet effective remote. Optionally, you can purchase a wi-fi enabled handheld (the Nokia 770 is popular), and have full control while also viewing album art, etc.

Since the Slimserver software is open-source, there are a large number of programmers world-wide developing new apps which expand it's capabilities.

Actually, Dave, the SB3 setup was easier than I thought! I bet I could run you through what you need to do...

If you want quit being an old anny curmudgeon! :p

It's all a matter of opinion. For me, it's not about convience it's about the best sound. The SB3 for me is background music when not critical listening. 95% is not good enough for me. Those of you that use a SB3 and do not own a cd/dac combo should audition one in your system.

Have you tried feeding the Squeezebox digital out to your DAC?

Since the "transport" part of the Squeezebox should be superior it must be the SB3's DAC which holds it back.

The next question is, 95% of what? If 100% refer to your five digit transport & DAC combo, then 95% would be absolutely amazing. OK, so we know that the stock SB3 is nowhere near as good.

I rate the SB3 w/out ext. DAC somewhere in the middle between my Denon 2910 and Arcam 137. It is without a doubt much much better than the Denon but clearly not as good as the Arcam. This puts it in $1200 or better CD player category. This is a remarkable achievement for such a convenient and cheap device, though certainly not 95% of your reference.

Did you receive that jabberwockie linear PSU?

I have been in the same boat, more or less, for weeks now. Transporter or external DAC upgrade? The decision would be easier if the Transporter did not have those handles! OTOH I like buttons on my devices so I can operate them without a remote. The dual display is also very nice.

The DAC I'll get if I decide against the Transporter is the CIAudio VDA-2/VAC-1. What attracts me is the oversampling design in conjunction with a low order anti-aliasing filter, and Class A output stage. That should avoid the vices of both pure oversampling and non-os approaches, and result in a neutral and certainly clean sound picture. Since you are already using a tube pre, do you still need a DAC which adds more warmth?

Just curious, what is your transport/dac/jitter combo? Are you using an external word clock as well? Also curious if you are using the stock Squeezebox switching wall-wart?

Lastly, since I started spouting off percentages, just wondering how you rate the Squeezebox on a percentage basis vs. your higher-end digital setup.

My high end digital is Camelot Roundtable, Uther Mk4 (DAC) and Dragon 5.1 Plus Jitter Reduction. I would say that the SB3 hooked up using the digital out into my Uther Mk4 is 90-95% of the high end digitall combo. As for the SB3 I use a external Power supply that I bought for it. Honestly, there is no noticable difference with it compared to the stock PS when using the digital out.

Thanks for that link Spike!

Did anybody catch WSLam's commentary there about the Transporters S/PDIF transmitter chip (on page 2 of his photos)?

"According to Sean Adams, CEO of Slim Devices, this chip is not used at all by the current firmware but may be enabled in the future to support things like the "TacT tape loop" idea, higher sample rates, etc.

In short, spare power waiting to be unleashed!"

Now THAT'S intriguing!

BTW, check out the rest of WSlam's blog and hi-fi photos... SUPERB!

Hmmm, just wondering what your total cost was for this über Uther setup? ;)

At some point we all need to decide how much more we're willing to invest for increasingly diminishing returns. Sounds like that 5-10% improvement was worth it to you. Cool!

Just curious, do you have a vinyl setup as well?
