Audiogon has a set listed from a store as:

"Black, hybrid with 10" woofer. One panel is down a few db's "

If purchasing new panels, would it be worth it? How much are panels? Would new panels solve the issue of being "down a few db's"?

You'll most likely need new panels, but it may be the electronics too. Find out how much new panels are (including shipping) from ML and do your calculations. It may be worth decoding the SN on the panels - if they've been looked after (non-smoking envirinment) and less than five years old then it is unlikely the panel. Alternatively, if they are older than 15 years then it is likely the panel. See what you come up with........

Hola Peter...as far as I know, you should change both panels, because they are mirror image...Martin Logan, in the building process, match the panels once they are at the last stage for timbre and sensitivity...very close tolerances are chosen here. Go for them and enjoy!...happy listening,
Roberto.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I did email the guy asking for what year and what the serial numbers were and got: #SS2CL040/041

Then I searched and found the thread where the serial number coding was listed on our site, but like others posting on that thread, it doesn't seem like the Sequel 2 is listed. Plus, I have Basic Vista so I can't view the entire Word Doc that's attached to the thread that shows the serial numbers :(

Can someone please decipher the serial numbers?

I also thought that I could ask them to swap the panels, so then if the other speaker sounded lower, it would conclude that the pannels are definitely the source of uneven loudness. Just not sure how much time they would be willing to spend swapping panels (I'm such a pessimist  )

try the decoder thread here instead it uses an adobe pdf file rather than a microsoft word document.

SS2CL040/041 => Sequel 2, 1991, December #041 and 042

Got it Burke! Thanks!

So since they are about 16 years old, I guess it most likey is the pannels.

I feel a bit better knowing that I will be using these in my HT system, where I DO have a volume level feature for each speaker. Up until a few minutes ago I was thinking "I wish my system had a balance control...oh wait, I won't be using this in my 2CH system! LOL" So for now I should be all set! WOW! For only $550!

Thanks guys for all your help and lighting fast responses!!

Good luck.Of course, it still could be something other than the panels causing this, but with panels of that age - they probably need replacing anyway.

Peter, sounds like a reasonable price for units in that condition.

The new Panels are ~$550

As for the electronics, yes, a cap might be in need of udpating/repair, but in general they should go 20+ years no problem.

Another item to think about on a 16+ year old speaker is the woofer. It's due for a relacement as well. So factor that cost in to equation.

I'd say to get a pristine (as good as new) set out of this, would set you back another 800 ~ 1000 bucks on top of purchase price.

I just picked up new panels for my Sequel II's - $550

I also picked up two new woofers as well - $129 each.

So with shipping (UPS), it should be around $830-$850 depending where you are in the US.

$850 - That's not bad at all. I think I'll replace the panels and the woofers, especially now that I decided to purchase the Sequels (I picked them up last week). It'll be like having a new "sounding" set of $3000 speakers for $1350!

Now, how do I go about purchasing the replacement items? Do I go to a retail store or get them direct from ML? (will it be cheaper going direct?)

And final questions in regards to the new panels. Will the newer ones use the Xstatic trechnology? A few days ago a "signature" dealer told me the replacement pannels will not have the same pannel technology as in the current models, and that therefore the newer models will all sound better. He told me that the Xstat pannels on my Sequels will not work because they use a different power supply and x-over. He also said I am better off getting an older center instead of the current models since it would be a better match with my Sequels & ReQuests ( I wanted the Stage). What are your thoughts on all this?

Thanks again everyone for your replies!

Yep, what a steal.

Call ML and ask for Jim Powers. If he is unavailable, leave a voice mail and he will call you back.

No, but you will get clear spar panels.
