I have just returned home from an estate sale with a pair of black tall MLs called Request. They were powered by a Yamaha dsp A1 receiver so I bid and got that also. My question is about the retail prices of these units and if they really sold for $4800 and $2700 respectively at retail locations. I paid $800 for speakers and $165 for the amp. I think I got a good deal based on listening to some old favorites like Flimm & the BBs or Aliens ate my Buick by Thomas Dolby and Bird On A Wire by Jennifer Warnes. Did anyone else have a unexpectedly emotional experience when they listened to MLs for the first time? They just seem so honest and effortless with anything I ask of them.

First off, welcome. Glad you found us here.

You got a hell of a deal on those ReQuests. I used to own a pair myself prior to the CLS's that I'm running now and they were simply awesome when paired with the right associated equipment. I don't recall what I paid for my ReQuests when I bought them new, but the $4,800 number you mentioned doesn't seem out of line.

I'm not familiar with the Yamaha receiver you mentioned, but I will tell you that the ReQuests can be hungry beasts. If the Yamaha satisfies your needs then good for you. If you want a whole new level of revelation you might want to consider separates someday. Take your time positioning the speakers and give them at least 3 feet of distance from your back wall. They can be downright spooky with regard to imaging when you have them carefully set up.

Most of all, welcome to the club and enjoy the wonderfully music they are going to bring you!

Welcome. And congrats on your great deals -- well done!

I have (still) the Yamaha DSP A1 you mentioned, and it is quite a strong unit with many features. Try them, and enjoy them, then settle on the settings you like best. Note that it has pre-outs so it can serve as a pre-pro, if you desire.

Most of all -- have fun!

Welcome Essay... yep, great deal from that estate deal.

I occasionaly ponder just who it is that will end up getting a great deal on my audio gear when I croak. I already hate them ;)

I run a pair of reQuests in my HT and love them. As Mitt stated above, careful positioning and plenty of quality watts and you will reap massive sonic rewards.

Cheers

I've contemplated using the pre outs to a Adcom 555. They come up on eBay a dozen times a month for $450 to $500. Has anyone used Adcom equipment with their esl's? Stated a different way...if 500 was the budget for a main 2 channel amp in a HT and music application, are there some obvious choices to consider?

I was never big on Adcom, though some folks seem happy with that brand. I worked in a hifi shop years ago that carried Adcom, and those units were no stranger to the repair shop.

Many here have had some luck with Emotiva (though there's at least one thread here that documents customer-support problems).

I saw that someone was selling some Outlaw Audio amps (200W monoblocks) on Agon for $150 each. That seems like a heck of a deal... maybe worth considering.

There are more than a few threads herein that discuss/debate this amp versus that amp... no shortage of opinions. Search is your friend (or mortal enemy). And if you haven't yet read it, see here: http://www.martinloganowners.com/fo...uently-asked-question-on-this-site.-READ-THIS!!

Congrats on the reQuests! From my experience, the Adcom will make the reQuests sound harsh. I just took a peek into A'gon and saw that there is a Classe' 70 and a Parasound Halo A21 for the $500 budget. Those amps are better match with the reQuests than the Adcom. Good luck (from another reQuest owner).

Thanks for the input, after hearing a high end system with an older Denon 2800 with very low distortion and 123 db s/n ratio, my choice was made for me and I bid for one on EBay. Long story short...it's on the way. Does anybody use tube amps w thier ML's. And with what results?

There are many here using tubes with their logans... Here are the links to the threads I've participated in on this very subject of comparing big sand amps to tubes...

Bi-amping - solid state to tubes
