I'm building a new home and will finally have a dedicated media room. I'll be upgrading to a front projection system and I started to wonder if my ML reQUESTs will be a source of distraction by reflecting the light from the projector. For those with a similar setup, what has been your experience?

Thank you,
John

I have SL3s and use a Mitsubishi HD1000U which is a fairly bright projector. I'm projecting a 92 inch picture with my SL3s about 3 feet from the rear wall and not too much more than 85 or so inches between them. A 92in diagonal screen is 80x45, I believe. I really don't see much light deflection off the speakers, so it's not a distraction for me, or I haven't paid much attention to it.

My reQuests are about 8.5 feet apart and right on the outside edge of a Stewart 45x80 (92" 1.78:1) screen. Back when I had a Barco 800 (and prior to that a Vidikron TGS300) the reQuests would show a vertical diffraction line, about a foot tall, near the top of the panel, on the inner third. From the seating area, you would see a vertical streak from each of the projector's three tubes (notice the similiarity to Jim Powers toe-in technique).
That problem disappeared when we stepped up to a Runco CL410, a DLP unit. Although the DLP throws a brigher image, there are no unwanted reflections whatsoever. In the photo you can see how close the speakers are to the screen....when down the screen border actually covers about 1/4" of the reQuests inner trim piece.

On my Monoliths (pretty large speakers), there is no reflection for the Projector in my setup. And I use a three-eyed monster (Sony G70 CRT) PJ.
The monoliths are right up against the frame (actually, the inner rail is not visible as it's behind the frame). See my system pics.

I'd say with a modern single lens Digital, it shouldn't be a concern.

just a little toe-in will likely eliminate such problems.

my toe-in angle is just normal (the flashlight technique angle) and it does away with such problems.

i have seen a summit system with this problem -- the newer panels present a a bigger potential mirror -- but they were not toed in at first, and just changing the angle slightly solved it.

Thx for the quick feedback!

I really appreciate your responses. I hated the thought of potentially abandoning my reQUESTs, Logos, and Scripts. Now I just need some black Scripts to replace the white pair that were appropriate for a different space. I wonder if a speaker fabric "shroud" could be neatly fashioned to allow my Scripts to blend in with the new black ceiling. I'm going to attempt to mask the light oak rails on the reQUESTs as well.

Thx!
John

What condition are your oak rails in? I have a pair of new, but unfinished cherry rails (I begged ML for an unfinished pair) plus a pair of new (but finished) maple rails. The unfinished rails would probably take stain or paint nicely.
I'd trade either for your oak rails if they were in VG condition.

I'll keep the unfinished rail swap in mind, but I'm not quite ready to go that route yet. Thank you for the offer. My rails look to be in excellent shape. I'll inspect them cm by cm if we move toward a deal. Thx again.
